After experiencing enormous success in Los Angles, Seattle and London, the popular pseudo taxi service, Uber, is coming to Track Town, USA.
Carless inhabitants of Eugene, rejoice! Uber is an app used for ride sharing and taxi services. The app uses your GPS to find where you are and will send a driver to pick you up, even if you don’t know the exact address of the location you are stationed!
“But I’ll be driven around by total strangers…?”
Yes! You will! It’s not like you’re average taxi driver isn’t a stranger, however these strangers have gone through thorough background checks and their info is available to you through the app. They even provide a picture of your driver, so you can totally pick the super cute one, if you’re into that. Oh, also these drivers promise to be super careful drivers, that’s probably because they drive people in their own cars. Uber will also bring new jobs for the Eugene people. The hours are flexible and drivers typically create their own schedules.
“I never have any cash on me…”
This app is completely cashless! Just hook your debit or credit card up to the app to pay. The prices are very reasonable and it makes it easy to split the cost with friends.
"So is there anything wrong with it?"
Well while I don’t think that Eugene taxi drivers will start an intense protest because we’re more mature than our past rulers, (suck it England), this will mean a drop in business for other forms of ride sharing services. Zip car is a popular program used on campus, but Uber has a definite chance of kicking their butt. This will take some business away from Safe Ride, but it’s free so I don’t think they’ll mind cutting down on their high volume of numbers.
It is unclear when exactly Uber will come to Eugene, but one thing is for sure: someone will puke all over an Uber car within the first 12 hours.
Welcome home, Uber!
