I believe the young, wise Sophia Grace said it well in her song "Best Friends," when she raps "That's my girl / Got my back / When I need her / Always there." We all have that one person in our lives who understands and tolerates us best, who never fails, and who you can't imagine your life without. However, there are multiple kinds of best friend relationships and I thought I'd explore a couple of them with the help of some familiar faces.
Sister From Another Mister
Leslie Knope & Ann Perkins, as seen on "Parks & Rec"
Leslie and Ann have the ultimate friendship. They've been there for each other during their best and worst times. They celebrate important friendship milestones. They seek the approval of the other when pursuing romantic interest, but would never let it get between their relationship. They have each other's back no matter what and they love each other. This is the rainbow-infused space unicorn kind of friendship, so hold on to it when you find it!
Mentorship
Liz Lemon & Jack Donaghy, as seen on "30 Rock"
There's a special bond that is developed when you choose a student and decide to teach them everything you know. This is a friendship that requires a lot of trust and mutual respect. While Jack and Liz are incredibly different on the surface, when you look deeper you'll find they share ambition and love for their job. Mentorships truly become special when the learning becomes a two-way street and the master begins to learn from the student.
Total Opposites
Leslie Knope & Ron Swanson, as seen on "Parks & Rec"
Whoever came up with the saying "opposites attract" hit it completely on the nail. This type of friendship can be a bit more entertaining than most. The significant amount of differences can sometimes be a source for some light teasing, but it's always forgiven because deep down there is only respect and understanding. Ron and Leslie are perfectly complementary in their strengths and their energies balance each other out. Most importantly, they each care for the other, regardless of the fact that Ron, for the most part, will deny it.
Bromance
Sherlock & Watson, as seen on "Sherlock"
Who can you count on in this world if not your bro? While the word bromance is a relatively new term, the concept has been around for a while. Bros watch sports and play video games together, but they're also not afraid to watch a chick flick and talk about their feelings. Bros give the best advice, because they know each other the best. The amount of inside jokes and original games is too high to count. Truth is, bros love each other and they aren't ashamed of it.
Siblings
Sam & Dean Winchester, as seen on "Supernatural"
For a large chunk of your life, it's possible that your sibling is the person who most understands your life and what you go through on a daily basis. You live with them, you fight with them, at times you co-exist, but you always love them. You want nothing else than to see them be happy in life, and you're more than willing to cause pain to anyone who stands in the way of that. The Winchesters may need to resort to extreme measures to protect each other, but anyone who cares about their sibling can definitely identify with their intentions.
Soulmates
Jim & Pam Halpert, as seen on "The Office"
Listen, I can't talk about Jim and Pam for more than five minutes without feeling the need to ugly cry, so I'll make this quick. The person you marry is the person you will spend the rest of your life with, so doesn't it make sense for your partner to be your ultimate best friend? Pam and Jim have personally taught me this and much more. They also single handedly ruined any other TV couple for me by being the epitome of perfection, but you know, whatever.
The Crew
All the friends, as seen on "Friends"
The only thing better than having one best friend is having many. You're guaranteed to always have someone on call and ready to hang out. When you're feeling low, there are multiple people who can cheer you up. "Friendsgiving" is a real holiday, perhaps the most important of them all. All of your Instagram pictures are tagged with #SquadGoals and you feel absolutely no shame. You love all your friends equally and are so happy to be part of such a wonderful group.
