Most people assume there are only two types of twins; however, there are actually seven different types: identical, fraternal, half-identical, mirror image twins, mixed chromosome twins, superfecundation, and superfetation. Many people wish to be a twin because they believe it is exciting and has many perks, but being a twin is not as pleasurable as it seems to those outside the small circle.
People compare twins to one another all the time because comparing them is a way of distinguishing the differences between twins. In beauty, sports, and academics, there is always one twin that is better than the other. My twin sister and I both play three sports, and I know she is more athletic. But as soon as we started applying to colleges, I can say I am smarter. We both know and will admit who is better at what, so we do not need other people pointing it out for us. However, with the constant reminder from other people about who is the better twin, there is always competition between us. No one wants to be a loser without putting up a fight, and that directly applies to twins.
Being a twin is like being a sister, but much closer. Twins share everything, from clothes to the car, to birthdays; they never get the chance of being their own person. Sure, some twins have different friends and personalities, but most twins have complementary personalities so they have the same friends. Personally, my sister and I have the same friends and share a car. A lot of twins go to college together and become roommates, which I will never understand. I refuse to be roommates with my sister in college, let alone go to the same college as her. I may miss her when we get to college, but I need to experience life on my own for once and distinguish myself as my own person. College will be the first time we are apart for longer than a few days since we were born and I need to prove to myself that I can live independently.
The way people think of twins is what make the experience somewhat annoying. People do not grasp the concept of twins and make it out to be some rare occurrence that never happens when in reality, it is exactly just like having a brother or sister. The truth is twins do not have twin telepathy, or want to dress alike, or say the same thing at the same time. Twins are as different as any other pair of siblings. Even with all the misconceptions, my twin sister is my best friend and I love her with all of my heart. I love being a twin and having a twin and I would not change my life for anything.
