‘Twas the night before recruitment, when all through the sorority house
Not a sister was stirring, besides an unprepared sophomore looking for a blouse.
The doors were decorated throughout the hallways by the craft chair,
In hopes that new girls would notice the flare.
The G Phis were nestled all exhausted in their beds,
While visions of future littles danced in their heads;
And the house mom in her ‘kerchief, and I in my towel wrap,
Had finally quieted our voices for just a quick nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a shatter.
My big sprang from her bed to see what was the matter,
Away to the window I flew to see drunk people on the lawn, throwing trash;
A birthday girl wearing a 21st” birthday sash,
The beer bottle in the front yard made me jealous, though,
Reminded me why I was staying in all weekend along with Greek row,
When what did I see on my lawn, but a beer, I shivered thinking about how the
day was finally almost here,
With little, cute bids so lively and quick,
Our house will be perfect and everyone will click.
More quickly my alarm went off when I’d barely fallen asleep,
I’ve never hated a sound more than that “beep, beep!”
And girls whistled and shouted and someone called my name,
Because it was Spirit Day! And it was time to learn the potential girls’ names,
“Now Meghan! Now Kelsey! Now Samantha and Lauren!”
"Then Jillian! Then Rachel! Then Julia and Karen!”
To the top of the stairs! To the right of the door!
Now recruit away, recruit away, recruit away, all!
As wild sorority girls before an online Lilly sale anticipated,
It was amazing to watch as every girl in the house participated.
So up to the house tours the hallways they flew,
With walls full of paddles and Big/Little crafts, too –
And then, with a tinkling, we heard from the formal room
Then the stepping and scurrying of each platform shoe.
As I drew in my curls and was turning around,
Down the stairs came that girl and I knew I had found,
She was dressed in navy stripes and was blonde just as I,
I knew we would bond over funny movies and boys in bow ties,
A bundle of Alex and Ani bracelets jingled on her wrist,
And I knew my letters on the next bracelet would be a perfect fit.
I knew she would be my little and my little she would be,
We talked about how much we loved bad puns and country,
The party was over before I was ready.
We bid the girls goodbye and complimented their pedis,
A wink of my eye and a twist of her head,
Soon let me know it was something I said,
I dreamed of seeing her the next day of recruitment,
But then I was distracted and thrown into the movement.
There was clapping and snapping and chanting with smiles,
Then the potential girls were filed out of the aisles.
We spoke not a word and went straight to our notes,
I wrote down my favorites and some special quotes.
The recruitment chair gave us a nod and up the stairs we rose,
To greet the next group with our skinny arm pose.
We did this 10 more times andwhen the stars were bright,
We exclaimed, “Happy recruitment to all, and to all a good night!”
