When most University of Alabama students think of that prime location on the strip next to Waffle House, they most likely think of The Jupiter - if you are a super senior, you may even remember The Dixie #RIP. But times are changing here in T-Town. Druid City Music Hall is taking the reins and changing Tuscaloosa's music scene.
Hosting their inaugural concert Wednesday, August 26, Moon Taxi set the bar high for this groundbreaking new venue. Druid City Music Hall sold out the Moon Taxi show before doors even opened.
5th year senior Aubrey Craig attended the show, saying, “I had a great time at Druid City Music Hall. I've seen Moon Taxi two other times, once at the Bama theater and once at Bonnaroo. This was by far the best show yet."
The energy of the crowd radiated throughout the building. The crowd sang along as Moon Taxi brought down the house. But Moon Taxi isn't the only exciting band in the lineup this fall. Steven Summersell is one of the founding partners of Druid City Music Hall, with his company MarchOne Music. He is most excited about this venue opening because it is going to open many doors for students as well as Tuscaloosa natives.
"We're excited to bring a fresh new addition to the Tuscaloosa music scene; bringing local, regional, and national artists from a wide variety of genres, for everyone to enjoy," Summersell says. The venue is open to anyone 18 years and older to come and enjoy live music, and will also be available to rent for private events.
When I asked Aubrey Craig what he thought the biggest difference was between The Jupiter and Druid City Music Hall, he said, "The main difference from the Jupiter is the quality and number of bands booked. Moon Taxi was a great first show, and they have numerous other acts lined up for the fall."
"The Jupiter did occasionally bring in a good act, but only around one a semester, in my opinion. I would absolutely go back to another show at Druid City Music Hall, this was their first show and I had a great experience," Craig says.
Some of the confirmed artists on the list of upcoming performances include:
Aaron Lewis (Sept. 30)
Griz (Oct. 6)
Corey Smith (Oct. 22)
Big K.R.I.T. (Dec. 2).
I don't know about you, but I am beyond excited for Druid City Music Hall to bring some fresh new faces to the Tuscaloosa music scene. For more information regarding Druid City Music Hall, you can visit their website.
