Most of you have heard about the explosion that took place in the East Village in New York on March 26th, caused by plumbing and gas work in the building that collapsed. If you haven't, well then you should come out from the rock you've been living underneath. The whole scenario was sudden, traumatic, and incredibly tragic. Two people have been found dead and the remains of a few others are still missing.
Now let's take this scene of mourning and grief and take a selfie with it. Yes, I said selfie. It was taken with the infamous "selfie stick" and all. This is what our society has deemed important these days. Instead of paying respects or simply observing, people instead take a picture.
Not even a decade ago did, the word "selfie" exist. Yet that seems to be all we do these days. Maybe you're having a great hair day or you're with your adorable baby cousin; by all means take a selfie and capture the moment. However, in times of crisis and tragedy, the last thing on our mind should be "let me take a picture of this and see if it goes viral."
The New York Post went on to publish what the whole world was thinking. They called the group of happy campers "village idiots" as they posed in front of a literal fire burning and fire trucks in the background. Chaos ensued behind them as they smiled for a picture. They turned this site of raw emotion into a tourist attraction. This building was a place that locals passed everyday, and those people inside the building have lives and families. There are firefighters risking their lives while 100 feet away, people are smiling. It is absolutely sickening.
If the selfie sticks ceased to exist and people wouldn't be be so self-absorbed, what potential we could have as a society.
