The 21st birthday is undoubtedly a milestone. Here's the thing though- I don't particularly care about drinking. Don't get me wrong, having the option to drink will be nice and I'm sure I'll have a glass of wine now and again. There are a handful of other privileges that come with turning 21 though. So, if you're like me and drinking isn't your thing, here are some reasons to be excited about your 21st birthday.
1. Cooking with booze
Okay so maybe being able to buy alcohol will come in handy. Nothing grinds my gears like trying to make a nice risotto and not having a white wine to simmer it in. Do you know how many recipes call for booze? A lot. If you need me, I'll be basting a turkey with a dry red.
2. Getting a new license
This isn't that exciting but the picture on my 18-year-old license is a hot mess. I am ready for a change.
3. Gambling
I feel like going to a casino is an experience you need to have at least once in your life. Nothing like a losing hand in poker to keep you humble.
4. Seeing comedians
Since many of these clubs serve alcohol, depending on the venue comedy shows may be over 21-years-old. Take in a show and laugh it up.
5. Rent a car (kind of)
This one has a bit of an asterisk next to it as 25 is the age most companies start renting at. However, when you turn 21 a lot of companies allow you to rent with a young driver's clause. Essentially you can rent a car but there are additional fees involved. It's a small win, but I'll take it.
6. Go to a club
Drinking may be a popular club activity, but sometimes you just wanna go listen to music and dance with your girls.
7. Rent a hotel room
Granted, some places will rent to you when you're 18. But let me tell you, it sure is stressful being a minor and planning a trip out of the state. When you're 21, you don't have to worry about missing the fine print.
And my personal favorite:
8. Concerts!
Any band, any venue. I have been so frustrated my entire adolescence and young adulthood at venues that are 21 and over. Never again will I have to worry about not being able to see my favorite band play. Rock on, my friends.
21 is probably the last milestone birthday of your youth. Enjoy your newfound freedom that comes with the ability to get into basically any age restricted venue. Enjoy being twenty-fun.
