The Truth About Sorority Life In My Opinion
Gabby Jordan

After starting a new school year, moving in with new roommates, and going through sorority recruitment, I can honestly say that I am making the right moves in my life. I have never been more excited for anything. There are horrible stereotypes about sororities in the media and I am here to set the record straight. So to all my new sisters and to all the Greek life skeptics out there, this should be a must-read for you.

Tackling one stereotype right off the bat: People are always concerned that students only go to college to party. To add Greek life on top of it adds even more concern because the media today portrays sorority life as constant partying, drama and nonsense. Obviously all universities are different, but speaking as an individual sorority girl from a smaller to middle sized Greek system, I can put those worries to rest.

Not only does Greek life provide opportunities for advancement for your future career, but it also provides an opportunity to better yourself. There is a constant support system of women to help you with life and ease your transition into each individual chapter. The first week in my chapter I felt comfortable, supported and at ease walking into the house because I knew that they were excited and more than happy to welcome me.

What most people don't realize is the girls are passionate about their majors, their friends and their philanthropies. Socializing and being involved on campus may be required, but partying is NOT a prerequisite for membership in a sorority, contrary to what social media may portray. Sure, everyone is excited to attend football games, meet new people and attend social events, but the biggest topic of conversation has been involvement of charity dinners, philanthropy events and strong sisterhood.

My biggest motivation going into recruitment was that I am an only child and friendships mean the world to me. Seeing how close my mom and her best friend/sorority sister are after all these years made me crave that kind of sisterhood. Going through recruitment, I can't recall how many times I heard an active member say that she came in looking for friendship and now sees her future bridesmaids in the chapter.

People will read this and either strongly agree or strongly disagree with me. Honestly, I don't care. If this helps even one girl make the step towards recruitment then I will be so insanely excited and happy for them. If Greek life doesn't end up being for you, then that's totally okay, but you may always regret it if you never make the effort to try.

It took me two years to finally convince myself to go through recruitment and my only regret is not going through sooner. To my sisters and my new pledge class, I am so thankful I have you in my life and I can already tell the next few years are going to be amazing. I can't wait to make more memories and live this crazy life with you! I love you guys so much!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
