So the things I’m about to tell you in this article will blow your mind. You may not be able to handle such truths like the ones that will be revealed to you in these words made out of pixels on your computer or phone screens. What I tell you may change your whole world. What is it? The truth about nature’s most dangerous creature: The sorority girl.
I know what you’re thinking, “Laura! How could you mention these creatures? They’re annoying little ditzes from the depths of the college bureaucracy! They pay for friends and can barely pass their classes! Their lives revolve around sleeping with the frat boys!” Oh, and the “Okay, we don’t care. Nobody cares about sororities.” But hear me out. Because what you think about sororities may actually be wrong.
This is coming from someone who hated the idea of Greek life, but is now in a sorority.
I’m not kidding. There was a time when I completely despised Greek life. I thought they were just a bunch of annoying ditzes that were the equivalent of the cheerleaders at my high school. The thought of joining a sorority made me want to laugh. Then, of course, my RA convinced me to go to this one recruitment event here sorority was having. And everything changed.
Instead of meeting a bunch of ditzes that I hated, I met a bunch of smart, kind young women who I found myself liking. I wanted to be in this sorority because they were cool. One of them was even in the same major as me and has given me the best advice on professors and how to generally survive in the writing program. My Big is one of the coolest people I know, and it’s nice to know that I have a support system whenever I need it.
The problem with people and Greek life is that the media and society tend to focus on the negative events. They focus on the bad experiences and decide to label that as the symbol for all Greek letter organizations in the entire country. One chapter of a fraternity did this? Then all of it is bad and needs to be shut down! It’s a ridiculous standard that needs to stop.
Most Greek organizations aren’t these terrible entities only bent on partying and making everyone’s lives a living hell. They’re organizations full of diverse people strengthened by bonds of sisterhood. They help the community through charity events and volunteer efforts. They ensure that their members are doing well in school by having GPA requirements to stay as an active member of the sorority. They’re goals are to build each other up. I know in my sorority, if we worry about someone, we let them know and try to ensure that they’re living their lives as safely and productively as possible.
Now I know this article will most likely be swept under the rug as some “silly article.” Most people will view me as biased due to my place in Greek life, but I urge those who actually pay attention to what this article reads and really think about Greek life and how maybe it’s not so bad after all.
