Last night I watched the Funny or Die movie “The Art of the Deal” which is a parody film adaptation of Donald Trump's book. A few days ago, I read an article about how someone put naked statues of Donald Trump in big cities like New York and San Fransisco. In addition, most late night talk shows are panning him relentlessly while celebrity after celebrity puts their two-cents into the election. These events force us to face the question: is it right for us to shame a human being in this manner? Yes, and I will explain why.
Let me start out by saying I respect those with differing opinions; I respect Republicans, Democrats with whom I disagree, Libertarians, Green Partiers, Independents, and anyone else you can think of. If someone has an educated opinion in a matter, or something they are really passionate about, I am willing to hear them out and have an intellectual debate and hopefully learn something from them. It is important to get as many view points as possible and a greater understand of the issue so that you can either better understand your side, or perhaps even change your opinion due to new evidence. For example, I am not a Gary Johnson fan, I was not a fan of Mitt Romney or John McCain and I did not like their policies or agree with most of their views. However, I respect them, and I enjoyed watching educated debates on television; I definitely learned more about the issues which helped mold my viewpoints. These are respectable people who have done great things for this country and the people they have represented.
Now, what the media has done to Trump would be appalling if it were done to any other person. The way they hang on every word he says and bring Trump supporters on CNN who clearly have no idea what they are talking about is ridiculous. For any normal candidate, there would have been public uproar and upheaval and people would get annoyed, regardless of their party affiliation. However, it's different this time.
Donald Trump is no normal human being. I can say with no worry of offending others that this man is a hate monger who says horribly outrageous things about those who are not like him in regards to gender, ethnicity, social status, or really anything. Whether you like him or not, you have to agree with how he has upset a variety of groups, including myself, despite the fact that like him, I am a white male Presbyterian from New York who grew up better off than many. Now, in no way am I nearly as wealthy or privileged as he is, but many Trump supporters share similar traits like the ones I listed. The majority of Trump supports are done with the system and the rhetoric of many politicians who have become too selfish and partisan to do their job and truthfully, there are very few from either party who don't fit that description. People are sick and done of the division in this country, however, Donald Trump, someone who literally is only rhetoric, is in no way, and I mean absolutely no way, the answer.
The problem is not that he has said all of these things, the problem is that he said at least one of them. Any of these comments alone would have derailed most candidates almost immediately. It took Chris Christie, a man groomed by the GOP for years to be the nominee, a small bridge scandal to derail his entire campaign. Yet, the statements made by Donald Trump have made him the GOP Nominee and I honestly believe, in my own personal opinion that does not involve the Odyssey or CUA (obviously), that he is a threat to our national security. To me, his rise is too similar to dictators in history who have gone on to do horrible things to other people. I truly hope that if you do not know who to vote for this election, you do not vote for Trump. Please vote Hillary, or if you don’t like her, vote for a third party. I am a firm believer in the idea that a third party would help America run significantly smoother. I also hope that this is the end of the Republican Party as we know it so they are able to regroup, rebrand, and become a party that I not only can agree with, but one day maybe even vote for. However, for the time being this party is up in flames, and until they solve the problem of their nominee, they will do nothing but hurt the name of a once proud and prominent party.
