Since the Constitution was drafted all the way back in the 1700s, our country has been divided into two distinct political parties, the Republican and Democratic parties. Each party has their certain distinct characteristics and beliefs. The belief is that by allowing this, our US citizens can rightfully choose a party that they can relate to. This friendly competition (to put it lightly) that takes place every four years, brings an array of candidates that campaign in hopes of becoming the new President of the United States. Over the past few years, we as country have made history over and over. We voted in President Obama, the first black president. We did this twice. It doesn’t matter if you don’t believe he was the right choice of office. What matters is that people understanding that our country is capable from moving away from our discriminatory past and instead moving into a society that is more perspective and including. Now, at this election, we are on the brink of making history. The US citizens could vote in the first woman president or vote in a sexist, racist, bigoted man. Which one will it be?
I don’t care whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat. Both parties strive for the same outcome. Our job and privilege as citizens is to vote a president into office that can reform our society, for the better. It’s our job to vote for a president that has everyone’s best interest in mind, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, etc. After all, our country is built on this ideal. In this election, we have seen a very diverse amount of candidates with various different platforms, but only one has stuck out like a sore thumb. This is Donald Trump. He has developed quite a reputation in the media, a bad one at that. The reason behind that is that this man has come out to interviews and debates with the nerves to completely disregard women and their abilities to be successful, completely disregard our country’s stance on religious freedom, and has insulted almost every race and ethnicity that is represented in this country.
So, why this man? Why have we given this man the opportunity to go out and completely disregard our country’s foundation? How has the Republican party let this man run for president, knowing that he has no regard for no one else but himself and everyone in that one percent?
This man has no previous government leadership positions, which makes me a little nervous. I don’t know about you, but I would rather have someone in office that has somewhat of an idea of how to run a country. I don’t want an ex reality star to make decisions about who is worthy and who isn’t, which he has clearly answered through his various interviews. Since the tragic mass shooting in Orlando, Trump’s first response to the incident had a lack of remorse. The only thing he included in his tweet basically is summed up to “I told you so.” How could your first response be that when there are families and friends grieving for their 49 children, sisters/brothers, aunts/uncles? To me, that is one of the most, if not the most, disrespectful responses to a tragedy I have ever seen. This man has basically waged war against Islam, because he believes that everyone who is part of this religion is a terrorist, or in danger of becoming one. I don’t know if this man has ever heard of fundamentalists? I don’t think he understands the concept that these jihadists are people that pervert the great religion of Islam to justify these terrible, disgusting acts of violence. This is a very small portion of people who practice this, so why would you classify people who find is as terrible as we do into the same portion? The cherry on top is Trump’s racist comments about how a judge couldn’t do his job because of his “Mexican heritage.” So basically, since he’s not a white man, he can’t have good judgment or he has no idea what he’s talking about. Like that makes any sense. I was seething with anger when I heard this but after awhile I calmed down because I’m going to prove Trump wrong. Maybe he’ll never hear of me or maybe he will, but to me it’s good enough if I go out into the world and be a successful Mexican-Guatemalan woman. Who’s going to have the last laugh? Me, and it’s going to be feel so good.
Vote for whoever you want. But do you really want to vote for a person that has no perception of diversity? I thought we were mostly past that part of our history. I know I don’t and I can hope that you don’t either. I don’t know about y’all, but I don’t want that on my conscience.
