We make America great.

Trump Can Not Make America Great

Here is the truth. I am not going to sugar coat what I am about to tell you. I am not going to beat around the bush or try to spare any feelings. I am going to tell you something that every single one of us needs to hear. Are you ready?

Ok... Here goes.

Trump can NOT make America great again.

America, we are scared. Our hearts are full of fear as we watch our home, once so colorful and full of life, disintegrate into a place of hatred and anger. We are scared that our children will grow up to hate the boy next door because his skin is a shade darker than our own. We are scared that the next time we go out to a concert or a ball game a terrorist will attack and we won't make it out alive. We are so scared that we run. We run as fast as we can through the dark towards anyone and anything that may hold just a little light, and right now, we think that Donald Trump is holding a flashlight. But, America, he isn't.

Donald Trump isn't trying to make our fear go away, instead he is feeding on it. He is telling us everything want to hear simply because he thinks we are listening. He is taking advantage of our vulnerability and using it as a tool to grow his campaign. Trump cannot make us great, he does not WANT to make us great. He wants to change us. He wants to shape us using a mold that he designed himself. America, we cannot be made great by putting up a wall. We cannot be made great by a trade deal. No law can make us great.

The love and joy in our hearts and the small things we do for one another without expecting anything in return is what makes us great. Having empathy for each other in time of need. Not creating problems that have no business being there. America, stop blaming someone else for things we can not hold our own selves accountable for because of what they may look like. We all are guilty of this. So instead, accept them. Accept them instead of trying to change them. Understand that sometimes not everyone is going to like the same things or feel the same way as you, and that is ok. That has to be ok.

Love. Joy. Empathy. Accountability. Understanding.

These are what makes us great.

When Michelle Obama gives a speech, she doesn't list off the things that her husband has accomplished during his time in office. She doesn't pinpoint the exact location of where her husband was when he may have made America great, because she knows that her husband is not what makes America great. We are. A president is a leader, but they have to have people to lead first. A president doesn't get to decide if his people are great. He doesn't get to decide how we chose to act towards one another. A president is the house, but we are the foundation. A president is the podium, but we are the microphone. A president does not make America great. The people of America do.

That is what makes America great.

Not a wall. Not a trade deal. Not a law.

Trump cannot make America great.

Because, WE, America, are already great.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
