So recently there has been a lot of uproar about transgender people using their preferred bathroom and how people are paranoid. My question to those who feel "uncomfortable" or "paranoid" is why? Why do you feel that way about trans people in general? They are just people. One of my best friends from high school opened up to me about being transgender during our senior year, and in my case that made me love him even more as a friend. I know there are some people that would say something along the lines of, "Oh, you're dating someone that used to be a boy so that makes you gay." If we were to use that logic we could say, "Oh, you're dating someone that used to be a child so that makes you a pedophile." See how that doesn't make sense? Trans people just want to be treated like normal people and to use a restroom of their choice. If we as a country are in uproar over this, why are we not in an uproar over unisex bathrooms? The only people being affected by this are the trans people.
After talking with one of my trans friends, Tate, he said, "The thing is, if a trans person walks into a restroom the only thing they really want to do is pee and leave. They're not going to disturb anyone. In fact, it's mostly cisgender people who create the fuss when they notice a trans person in the 'wrong restroom.'" If parents are going to say, "I don't care if my child comes out as a boy or a girl just as long as they are healthy," but kick their new daughter Jessica out for being born as Jackson, then why did they say, "I don't care if it's a boy or a girl?" Just imagine if this was you in their shoes, how would you feel? It is reasons like these that make it hard for people to find the courage to come out to their loved ones. Having close friends in this situation makes me want to be even more of an advocate for them.
Recently at my high school there have been people arguing both for and against having trans people use the bathroom of their sex change. I believe that the people that are against it are the people who are uneducated about the topic. People fear them because they believe they are violent, will attack them, drug them or rape them. That is far from the case. Some of these trans people fear going to the bathroom in a public place because they are afraid they are going to get discriminated against. This bothers me because people shouldn't be afraid to go to the bathroom. In all honesty, why does it matter what bathroom people go in?
Most people just want to go pee and get out.
