The Tower Guard at Michigan State University has announced that they will be opening the Beaumont Tower for tours for the first time this year to celebrate Homecoming. Tours will take place Saturday, October 15th, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. before the homecoming football game against Northwestern. They invite every student, alumni, parent, and lover of Beaumont Tower to come experience the inside of this beautiful Michigan State landmark. In addition to the tours of Beaumont held on Saturday, the Tower Guard will also be marching in the Homecoming Parade alongside their float on Friday, October 14th, at 6:00p.m.
The Michigan State Tower Guard is a volunteer based organization selected from the top five percent of the freshman class. These devoted students are committed to leadership, scholarship, character, and service and donate 120 hours of their time to volunteering with the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities throughout their Sophomore year. Many volunteers transfer textbooks into braille or audible versions, scribe notes and exams for students, and provide sighted guide. Tower Guard is one of the oldest student-run organizations on campus and is the only student organization to hold the keys to Beaumont Tower. A common misconception is that the Tower Guard literally guards Beaumont Tower. This is not the case. In fact, they mostly utilize the Tower to hold E-Board meetings.
Furthermore, Tower Guard does not stop participating in campus events after homecoming. They are also present in many campus fundraisers and events such Alex's Great State Race which is the running of the game ball the sixty-four mile trek from Ann Arbor to East Lansing by two double marathoners and the ROTC programs of both schools on Friday, October 28th, 2016. This race is run in celebration and memory of Alex Powell, a former Michigan State Student who worked closely with the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities while undergoing cancer treatment at the University of Michigan. Join the Tower Guard at the finish line at Demonstration Hall at about 1:30p.m. to cheer on the runners.
