The Mary Sue

You may have heard of the TV show "Jane the Virgin." It is about a girl named Jane Gloriana Villanueva. Though she commits to God and her abuela (grandma) that she will be celibate until marriage, she gets accidentally inseminated and becomes pregnant. It is a show that highlights many different things but it is rooted in love and family. Here is why Jane Gloriana Villanueva is my role model and why she should be yours too.

1. She always looks beautiful.

Not only is Jane naturally beautiful, but she also dresses nice. Even on days where she could be wearing jeans and a sweatshirt, her character is always wearing a very presentable outfit.

2. She is emotional.

I love this quality about Jane because I am also an emotional person. Jane’s vulnerability is refreshing to see as someone who struggles with holding back tears over silly things sometimes.

3. She puts family first.

Family has always been Jane’s first priority. Even though her family has flaws, she accepts them for who they are because she loves them. She turns to them for support when she has a dilemma or when she has made a mistake. They are always there for her and they help her get through tough times. This is important to me because I believe that family is very important and I see Jane’s reliance on her family as admirable.

4. She is a planner.

Jane is always planning ahead of time. She had her entire life planned out before the accidental insemination changed everything. Planning is my favorite thing to do because it makes me feel at peace, which is something I also see in Jane. Even when something changes the schedule, she finds a way to quickly arrange things so that everything will still work out.

5. She is religious.

Jane has had religion instilled in her from a young age since she lives with her abuela, a very religious woman. It is nice that Jane believes in God and is not afraid to show it.

6. She is a hard worker.

Jane’s determination to get what she wants is inspiring. There are instances where Jane stays up all night working on assignments in order to impress her professors and still seems to wake up looking glamorous. I cannot pull this off, but it is encouraging to watch Jane work hard for what she wants and succeed at getting it.

7. She makes mistakes.

Jane makes a good amount of embarrassing mistakes. The program makes an effort of emphasizing this to show that nobody is perfect and we all have the occasional slip-up. Jane puts herself in some very tough situations, but always seems to find a way out of it.

8. She is tough (REALLY TOUGH).

I mean, come on. She gets accidentally inseminated after planning out her entire life, goes through (what seems like) a hundred different instances of heartbreak and somehow still manages to get up in the morning with a smile on her face. Even when she faces the most challenging things, she always gets through them.

9. She sees the good in people.

Jane is a kind person. She sees the good in those who have hurt her and those who don’t deserve her love. She does it with maturity and does not attach bad feelings. She reaches out to people in need of love, leaving behind the past and their previous (sometimes negative) interactions.

10. She always stays positive.

This is the most admirable thing that I see in Jane Gloriana Villanueva. Despite all the reasons the world gives her to be discouraged, she finds a light in the situation and uses it to move forward with her head lifted high. Jane turns mishaps into blessings and it is something we should all strive to do.

These are the top 10 reasons why Jane Gloriana Villanueva is my role model! If you are a "Jane the Virgin" fan, I hope you enjoyed my analysis of Jane. If you do not watch the show, I encourage you to! Everyone can take something different out of watching it and it is all around entertaining.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
