School's out! The final bell tolls, the last test has been taken, and you're free at last! It's time for summer - sunny days by the pool, hanging out with friends, and not touching a single textbook for three straight months. But wait.. what is that on the horizon? A summer job! It's not quite the summer you pictured once you realize life requires money and you're going to have to go to work for it. Here are the five worst things about summer jobs.
1. The job search
If working your summer away wasn't bad enough, the work you put in to actually find the job doesn't pay you anything! You've got to clean up (or create) your resume and hit the streets to talk some poor soul into employing you for a few short months.
2. Alllllll that paperwork and training
Unless you're life guarding for the fifth summer in a row (and you'll probably need a new certification anyways) you'll have to learn an entire new job with skills that probably won't transfer into anything useful for the rest of your life. Not to mention the piles of paperwork you have to fill out before you even get started!
3. The money ain't that great
Summers usually call for seasonal, unskilled workers who earn.. well, less than desirable wages. This means that even after a long, hot two weeks of slaving over a cash register, your paycheck total less than even one day's worth of cash from the drawer. Wait, why am I doing this again?
4. Seeing people you know
Summers usually mean a return to your hometown, where your job at the local burger joint means you'll be running out of ketchup packets to tally how many of your former high school classmates you've had the pleasure of serving. Not to mention how weird it is to see your chem teacher not wearing his teacher uniform. *shudder*
5. Working.. or not
Whether your job actually requires you to do anything, or if you end up with one of those lucky do-nothing jobs, your time is suddenly filled with significantly less fun things and many more work things. Go ahead, gaze out the window and dream about all the things you'd rather be doing.
Summer jobs aren't exactly the fun and games you wish they were, but don't worry! Just a few more weeks and you'll be back in a classroom, dreaming of all the time you wasted and worked away during your vacation.
