When college rolls around, it's all over but the crying

Top Reasons I Hate Leaving my Sister
My Momma

With a new school year comes so many joys—you get to have the long awaited reunion with friends, go out to those bars that you missed so much, party it up at the frat houses like you aren’t completely aware of the rat in the kitchen; so many great things to look forward too! But with those great things and all the happiness, there are things that we would prefer not to endure—like saying good-bye to your dog, your bed, the perfect Wi-Fi connection that your home offers you that the school internet can’t. For me, the hardest part about saying good-bye to home and saying hello to college is having to leave my sister. My sister, the super model in the family, is everything to me, and having to leave her is like having to rip a kidney out so that I can actually afford that required textbook. Not to be dramatic, but when I say good-bye to her it’s almost like I’m going on this crazy 15th century voyage where I may never return home because I contract a slight fever. So instead of sit here and ramble on about how painful it is, let’s talk about why it’s that painful.

1. She is my co-pilot

If you don’t have a sibling, I kind of feel bad for you in terms of having to travel. My sister is my partner in crime, my co-pilot, the girl that yells at the exit I’m supposed to take as I pass it. When I leave for college, I no longer have her at my disposal to take a ride with me to Walmart, or Canada.

2. She is my shoulder to cry on

My sister may be the most sarcastic, unsentimental human being on this planet, but when my mom yells at me for not putting a fork in the dishwasher, she is there to listen to me complain about how much my life sucks.

3. She is my fashion expert

Remember above when I said she was the super model of the family? Well these aren’t lies, especially in terms of her style. I’m not going to deny the fact that I dress like a soccer mom who had way too much fun at the Goodwill last weekend—but my sister makes sure I know that I look like crap, and attempt to fix the disaster that I am. So when I leave for college, I’m on my own and free to dress myself, which is terrifying for both of us.

4. She is a ball of sunshine

My little sister wasn’t always a ray of sunshine in my eyes, and still to this day I have moments of pure hatred towards her. But most of the time, she makes me laugh and reminds me that it’s okay to not be perfect.

5. She is my best friend

No matter what happens, my sister is always there for me. We may fight, call each other nasty names, and occasionally punch each other, but at the end of the day, we share nothing but love. We sing in the car, dance in our bedrooms, we take triple chinned selfies together to prove that we are indeed as ugly as we say. We do each other’s make-up, and gossip about everything and everyone we possibly can. We can’t go a day without speaking to one another, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

As you can see, my sister is pretty darn cool, so darn cool, she walks her goats on leashes while rocking her shimmer highlighter and winged eye-liner. I love college, and I am so happy to have the opportunity to attend a great university where I have met so many fabulous people. But when the time comes to pack my life up and cram it back into my shoebox sized dorm room, I dread having to leave my sister.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
