The cupcake craze has come and gone. Frozen yogurt had its run. Boba drinks are on the way out. But ice cream is always trendy. Whether you’re born and raised in San Francisco and your parents took you to Swensen’s as an after-school treat or you’re a tourist visiting the original Ghirardelli ice cream parlor; it doesn’t matter. San Francisco’s ice cream culture welcomes everyone (but our lactose intolerant friends; that's why we have sorbet).
Ghirardelli
Address: 900 N Point St., San Francisco, CA 94109
Love notes: As a native San Franciscan, this is one of the only spots that I don’t mind braving through the tourist crowds.
Recommendation: Salted Caramel Brownie Sunday and substitute the vanilla for mint chocolate chip.
Swensen’s
Address: 1999 Hyde St., San Francisco, CA 94109
Love notes: For those of you who think you have to wait for peppermint ice cream during the winter, do not fret. At Swensen's, it's Christmas all year round, since their peppermint ice cream is a signature flavor. By the way, this is the original Swenson's location. It's small and a bit old-school, so they only take cash!
Recommendation: Peppermint
Mitchell’s
Address: 688 San Jose Ave., San Francisco, CA 94110
Love notes: A local favorite whose flavors represent the diversity of San Francisco. From Mexican chocolate to horchata, halo-halo, ube and macupuno, this parlor does not have a shortage of tropical flavors.
Recommendation: Avocado or ube
Bi-rite Creamery

Address: 3692 18th St., San Francisco, CA 94110
Love notes: Don't be scared by the line out the door and curving around the block; the wait is worth it! Grab a scoop and head over to Dolores Park across the street to see beautiful views of downtown as the cherry on top of this typical San Francisco adventure.
Recommendation: Honey lavender
Ice Cream Bar

Love notes: Boozy Milkshakes -- need I say more?
Recommendation: The Dublin Honey: Guinness stout; caramelized honey ice cream; Valrhona chocolate syrup; a float of Graham’s 10-year tawny port.
Smitten
Address: 2404 California St., San Francisco, CA 94115
Love notes: Smitten is the newest addition to our San Francisco ice cream community and definitely a splurge. However, each cup is made-to-order and watching them make your ice cream is fun as well.
Recommendation: Earl Grey with milk chocolate chips
