When I was growing up, board games were what everyone was playing. Rainy days, outside in the shade, anywhere, it was always fun to play these games. Family game nights consisted of nothing but laughs, great memories, and us not knowing that some of these will be forgotten. But nowadays, with the new fad of Pokèmon Go, these childhood games are stuck in boxes in the basement, or in the back of your closest, with the memories of your childhood. Now, there are SO many great board games out there, and many versions, but I am going to keep this straight to the point; taking it back to the originals. Here are my top five childhood board games that will never get old;
1. Battleship
From a basic board game to now a movie, Battleship was a game that needed a strategy of where you were going to put your ships, and luck. This was more of a boys game, but I played every now and again, and I gotta say, luck was never in my favor. These days, Battleship is taken to a new level for college students and people legal to drink; Battleshots has been invented. Same idea, but the "board" is made from a pizza box or some type of box, and your ship consists of shots. Cool right?
2. Candyland
This was one of my favorites! All the colors and the suspense of what color you get when you pick a card, made the game a lot of fun. Though this game may be for elementary kids, I would still play this! (I am 19 now...still would)! This game is pretty straight forward, no strategy involve, just have to follow directions! And no cheating!!
3. Twister
Now, this may not be a board game, but this was still a great game growing up. The more people the better! What made this game fun was being able to mess around with your friends when trying to get a hand or foot on the color called. Nothing but laughs come from this game. This game can be played many ways actually! One cool way I saw on Pinterest was spray painting the colored circles on grass, for a great lawn game. Another way is using the original board itself and putting paint on the corresponding color. It's messy, but still sounds like a great time!
4. Sorry!
Another great game! Sorry! is all luck! Moving from start all the way around the board to home, your fate of getting all your pawns home lies on the deck of cards. This game can be seen with many themes. From Disney to retro, this game is still great. The rules are pretty straight forward, giving you more time to make memories, than having to deal with confusing rules.
5. Uno
This is another one that's not technically a board game, but it is still a game, and really fun. All ages can play this one for sure! This one is a good game because the action cards like "Skip," "Reverse," and "Pick 4 cards," make the game exciting. Having the least amount of cards is the goal! Uno was always a favorite at day-camp. Now, they have a version of Uno that this device spits a certain amount of cards at you! That wouldn't be good if you were close to winning!!
There are so many other board games or card games that made up my childhood. From Hungry, Hungry Hippos to Trouble, I will always have the memories from playing these games with my friends and family. If you have yet to experience any of these games, DO IT! You won't regret it! A little friendly competition never hurt anyone!
