5 Truths About Holidays When You Have A Big Family

Historically, Thanksgiving is one of the few times out of the year where family and friends get together to stuff themselves with food, watch football, wait in line for the latest Black Friday deals and above all be thankful for everything the universe has blessed us with. However, when you come from a huge family like I do the Thanksgiving holiday means all of these things with just a little extra helping of crazy mixed in to the festivities. The truth is that whenever someone I know asks be about my family, the first question I ask them in response to their initial question is "have you ever seen the Film My Big Fat Greek Wedding?" Then depending on their response I will proceed to either explain the plot of the movie to them or I will tell them that my family is as large and as loud as Tulia's family is in the film. The only difference is that we are not Greek. This being said my Thanksgiving is crazy in the best way possible and there are a few things that are bound to happen during the holiday we all know and love. Therefore here is a list of five things that are bound to happen during thanksgiving when you have a big family.

1. Someone will have to sleep on the couch.

Let's be honest if you come from a large family and you happen to own the largest home, more often then not you are hosting Thanksgiving dinner. However, this also means that if you have family coming to visit from out of town they will potentially stay with you. This can only mean one thing and that one thing is someone will be giving up their bed and sleeping on the couch. This is not always a bad thing but it something that anyone who comes from a large family with lots of loved ones is going to have to accept and deal with.

2. It is going to be loud and also a little crowded

It is an understood that when a lot of people gather together in one place it will without a doubt be loud and eventually become crowded. What this means for my family is that at some point during Thanksgiving people will be talked over, a small child will start crying, screaming or both and there will be a lot of sweat resulting from the amount bodies all packed under one roof causing an influx of heat.

3. Life changing announcements and arrivals

Due to the fact that Thanksgiving is one of the only times that almost my entire family gets together to enjoy each other's company, it is also a time for big announcements and arrivals. Over the years my family has learned of many life changing events during the course of the Thanksgiving holiday. Some of these announcements have included but are not limited to engagements and new babies. In fact, this Thanksgiving my family is awaiting the arrival of a brand new cousin to come join the world.

4. A Surplus of food resulting in an extra long food coma

When you have a large family like me it means you make at least double the amount of food that would normally be served on Thanksgiving. This means that there is at least twice as many left overs and am even longer food comma after eating so be advised.

5. A lot of love

I feel like this point could be assumed however, I know that for some this may not be true. However in my home during Thanksgiving there is always a lot of love and laughter. For those however, who this is not always the case I hope that for at least one day of the year that you will find a place where this is true for you wherever that may be.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
