Cartoon Network's late-night action block, Toonami, gave viewers a shock when they replaced the much-anticipated third episode of "Samurai Jack's" final season with the much-awaited season premiere of "Rick and Morty," as their annual April Fool's Day prank. Many Jack fans were disappointed that they didn't get their fix for the week, while many R&M fans were overjoyed at the sight of an unexpected season three debut.
Regardless of how people felt about the scheduling, one resounding response came from those who watched the episode. In the premiere, "The Rickshank Rickdemption," Rick goes through a McDonald's drive-thru in 1998 for an order of chicken McNuggets with special "Szechuan sauce" that was a promotional tie with "Mulan" but was shortly discontinued and never brought back. Thanks to the enormous response by R&M fans to bring the sauce back, however, McDonald's is actually considering the return. Here's the throwback commercial to show what we may have to look forward to:
If Rick and Morty can cause such a stir to potentially get nostalgic treasures back onto shelves, why couldn't other popular shows do the same thing? So I decided to make a list of discontinued products that could easily make their way back into the spotlight with the right shows.
1. Oreo O's: BoJack Horseman
Oreo's breakfast cereal--yes, it was as awesome as it sounds--was sadly discontinued in 2007 (except in South Korea). That being said, Netflix's hit animated series "BoJack Horseman" (which is set to premiere its fourth season this summer) would be the perfect show to reintroduce the cereal to viewers who may have forgotten about it.
After all, BoJack's right-hand man, Todd Chavez, is always shown to be eating breakfast. If the upcoming season features an episode that travels back in time--which the past three seasons have, then it would definitely seem appropriate to see a young Todd munching on some Oreo O's.
2. Taco Bell's Bellbeefer: Stranger Things
What makes Netflix's hit suspense/mystery series so fun is its homage to 80's pop culture. Given Eleven's affinity for Eggo Waffles, it would only make sense for one of the characters to chow down on Taco Bell's version of the sloppy joe, "The Bellbeefer," which was discontinued in the 90's due to Taco Bell's, "Think Outside the Bun," campaign.
3. Jell-O 1-2-3: This is Us
While the first season of NBC's hit drama, "This is Us" just wrapped up its first season (check out my review on the season finale), fans are already anticipating its second season in the Fall. With the show being so sugary sweet, why not depict the "Big Three" as kids enjoying Jell-O 1-2-3, Jell-O's supreme package of three contextual layers: a creamy top, a mousse-like middle, and a plain jello bottom.
4. P.B. Crisps: The Walking Dead
If you loved "Zombieland" like I did, you know that Tallahassee's (Woodey Harrelson) obsession for Twinkies was absolutely hilarious. While "The Walking Dead" carries a more grim and serious tone, wouldn't it be great to have Rick weep over the depletion of Planter's sweet-and-salty cookies, "P.B. Crisps," due to the zombie invasion?
5. Hi-C Ecto-Coolers: Rick and Morty
Considering that Rick and Morty has already caused a resurgence for the Szechuan sauce, why not try to add the "Ecto-Coolers" to its repertoire? After all, considering that R&M has made reference to Ghostbusters in the past, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to see the grandfather and grandson duo go on an intergalactic journey for Hi-C's promotional drink that was discontinued in 2001. Though it was brought back recently for the new Ghostbusters movie, it should be a permanent fixture on our grocery store shelves.
