A Handful of Reasons Why College is Hard

College is the place where you learn to master the art of being an adult.

A Handful of Reasons Why College is Hard

1. Your professors have secret meetings to plot against you.

This feels so real doesn’t it? I think everyone can attest to this. I am convinced that it is true! I think we have all had those weeks where there is a paper, presentation, 3 three tests, a quiz, and a project due. Of course it is no fun, but hey it builds character!

2. Your bed time slowly gets later and later

Yeah, I know you agree. Every day you wake up exhausted and tell yourself, "I am going to go to bed early tonight." When was the last time that happened? Never? Yep, me too! Nocturnal is your new middle name, just accept it. After all, relaxing in your comfy bed while watching Netflix has become an extracurricular activity. Student by day, pro Netflix-er by night. Can I add this to my resumé?

3. You have to master the art of meteorology.

For your trek to campus, will you wear your purple leggings or your black ones? Duck boots or tennis shoes? Scarf or hat? Puffy coat or light jacket? This is why your weather app on your phone will become your new best friend very quickly! If it isn’t already, make it! Don’t be the person who comes to campus without a raincoat or umbrella right before a downpour because you will look like a wet rat when it's over. I can promise you that you definitely will not be singing in the rain.

4. A delicious meal turns into a granola bar.

Do you daydream about the days you once enjoyed home cooked meals every night? Yeah, me too. I'm salivating just thinking about my mom's cooking. (You're welcome, mom ;)) That daily breakfast that used to be so hot and buttery is now a dry, brittle granola bar. Your dinner that used to be so savory and protein-filled suddenly is Easy Mac in a throw away cup. One plus is that I have become an out-to-eat connoisseur because what else would I spend my money on? Food is essential for life, people!

5. One word: Money.

Is there EVER enough of it? Penny pinching is an understatement. I find myself having serious deliberation over the hamburger or the cheeseburger because that .50 cents will matter in five years, right? I think this is the ultimate struggle for most, if not all, college students all over the globe. Make budgeting a habit. And I’ll try to stay out of TJ Maxx!

In the end we all have to realize that college is the time to learn. In this season of life we may think we have it hard, but in reality we have it pretty darn good. Getting a bad grade feels like the world is ending, and I know this because I've been there. But, I am happy to let you know that the world has not ended and your bad grade is just a number. Just make sure to relish in the fact that you will one day miss these four years (well, maybe five if we're being honest). One day the stressors in your life will no longer be a test, but a stack of bills or a presentation due at work. If you ask me, I'll take writing an essay any day over that. You get to go to college once, but you get to work for the rest of your life. My advice to you: treasure the now, folks!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
