The world of Disney has many heroes, happy endings, and beautiful princesses. It also has some of the worst villains. Whether the antagonist is an overly strict parent or a man who fakes his love for our princess, we love to hate these characters.
1. Frollo - "Hunchback of Notre Dame"
OK, let’s be real. This guy is a downright creep. He is the embodiment of church corruption, and can we say a little rapey? There is nothing more horrifying than the song he sings about Esmeralda. He sings that it is not his fault that he is attracted to her. He is not to blame, it’s all her fault. If that isn’t rape culture, I’m not sure what is. He sings, “Now gypsy, it's your turn. Choose me or, your pyre. Be mine or you will burn” That literally means, be with me or die. If I can’t have you, no one can. He “sees corruption everywhere but within.” In the very beginning of the movie, when Quasimodo's mother dies trying to escape Frollo, he says, “I am guiltless. She ran, I pursued.”
2. Gaston -" Beauty and the Beast"
"It's not right for a woman to read. Soon she starts getting ideas, and thinking..." Absolutely everything is wrong with this. It barely needs an explanation. Gaston is the most self centered, conceited, sexist, vain character in all of Disney. All he wants is what he thinks he deserves, which is Belle as his wife. Belle is educated, driven, ambitious and has a lot of "ideas." She's everything Gaston would hate in a woman, but she is beautiful, and that is the sole reason he desires her at all. He throws Belle's father into an insane asylum in order to blackmail her into marrying him. Beast surely isn't the beast in this movie. Gaston expects Belle to conform to the patriarchy and be his little Belle, his little housewife, the one to raise his six or seven kids he says they will have. He even describes them as "strapping young lads, like me." Belle was going to be another trophy Gaston had on his wall.
3. Mother Gothel - "Tangled"
Poor Rapunzel locked away in her tower. Her only friends are the lizard and her sadistic kidnapper. Mother Gothel stole a baby girl away from her parents. The Queen almost died giving birth to Rapunzel, and I'm sure she was broken once she lost her princess. Mother Gothel gave Rapunzel an overall fear of the outside world. Rapunzel, being curious but obedient, did not see the world until her 18th birthday. On top of all of this, she was domestically abusive to poor Rapunzel. All of her love was toward the luscious blonde miles of hair that Rapunzel sported. Every time Gothel would kiss Rapunzel, it was her hair. When she was "worried" about Rapunzel, she checked her hair first. Mother Gothel brings down Rapunzel's self-esteem. In the song, "Mother Knows Best," she says that Rapunzel is "gettin' kinda chubby." She insults her intelligence left and right as well as her appearance. Mother Gothel says that the world is a cruel place with selfish people. She says that it will take any ray of sunshine and destroy it.
She should know.
Isn't that what she does?
4. Hans - "Frozen"
Where to start. Well, "Frozen" fans, we all knew Anna wasn't going to end up with Hans, but no one saw the dramatic "If only there was someone out there who loved you," line. Ouch, that's harsh, Hans. Where is your humanity? Hans gave Anna, a naive and incredibly lonely girl, hope. He gave her the possibility of true love. He gave her the companionship that she desired for so long. He promised he would never shut her out like Elsa did. He used Anna through the entire movie so he could become King of Arendelle. He's kind of just a big ol' bully. He didn't have to break Anna's heart to become king.
Love is an open door, but let's hope it's shut for him for the rest of his existence.
5. Governor Ratcliffe - "Pocahontas"
Listen with your heart, and you will understand that this guy defines racist America. He is the beginning of it all. He calls Pocahontas and her people savages. All he cares about is gold and the land that he believes belongs to him. He is greedy and refuses to listen to reason. He wants to massacre all of the natives on the land simply because they won't tell him where to find the gold.
He's not really the brightest villain, but he is manipulative and has enough power to change the minds of his men.
That sums up history pretty well if you ask me.
That's my short version of the list. In a lot of Disney movies, the main villain is tradition or culture. But these villain's are realistic and just prime evil.
