For frequent moviegoers, January is know as the pissbomb of the year. That's when we get the most generic and poorest of films released. This year, we had a Resident Evil film, a xXx film and an Underworld film released in the same month. That is absolutely disgusting! But, let's push that aside as we talk February!
5. "Get Out" - 2/24
It's crazy when you hear that Jordan Peele of Key and Peele fame is directing a horror film. But, I'm excited to see what he does as a filmmaker. Plus, I've heard from people at Sundance that Get Out is fantastic. It's also being said that it's crucial to the world today and the way we look at racism. It follows an African American man attending his Caucasian girlfriend's family home for a weekend, as we see dark and layered moments happen. I cannot wait for this, also since mainstream horror lately has been superb!
4. "The Comedian" - 2/3
I've heard divisive things about this Robert De Niro-starring movie. It follows him as a stand-up comedian trying to making a comeback, but with people only looking at him as a television character he played early in his career. It's directed by Ray helmer Taylor Hackford and co-stars Leslie Mann, Danny DeVito, Edie Falco and Harvey Keitel. I'm interested mainly due to the talent and plus, seeing De Niro and Keitel in a movie again is like something all cinephiles dream about! It looked interesting from the trailers and commercials, but it looks like a movie De Niro needs right now after the stinkers he has had come out lately (i.e. Dirty Grandpa).
I did not expect to enjoy the first John Wick. But, it blew away both critics and audiences, including myself, away, due to its brilliant action sequences and layered lead performance from Keanu Reeves. The sequel looks like it's going to carry the fun from the first and add more insanity to it. I love Keanu Reeves a lot as an actor, since he's so entertaining to watch. But the most important thing about Chapter 2 is that it reunites Reeves with his Matrix co-star Laurence Fishburne. How can that not be exciting, guys?!
P.S. If they kill the dog in this movie, I will burst a bubble!
2. "A Cure for Wellness" - 2/17
I have no clue what this movie is about, which I hear is the right thing. I've seen the trailer and it gives a Stephen King/Stanley Kubrick vibe. It's directed by Gore Verbinski, who helmed the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, as well as 2002's master horror film, The Ring. Underrated actor Dane DeHaan stars as the lead and it looks masterful. It looks terrifying and when Verbinski has his hands on the right project, he delivers!
1. "The LEGO Batman Movie" - 2/10
It has Batman. The end.
I'm only kidding, of course. There's so many reasons as to why you need to be excited. If you hated The LEGO Movie, a film I adored, and have no heart, something I do have, then this won't be your movie. This is certainly my movie! Will Arnett's Batman was a standout of The LEGO Movie and this solo movie looks hilarious. The other cast members are perfect choices with Zach Galifianakis as the Joker, Michael Cera as Robin and Ralph Fiennes as Alfred. The animation looks sharp and as a fan of Batman, it's cool that we'll see him in two movies this year.
So what films are you guys excited to see in February? Let me know down below! Share this post and I'd appreciate it!
