There are so many things out there for us to try, but sometimes our mind can get the best of our little selves. It’s easy to want to do something, but it’s easier to come up with an excuse and push it off. You will come into the right time when you realize that the "right" time doesn't exist. It’ll feel meant to be and almost even like home! Here are some excuses against yoga that I’ve heard breeze through the wind recently.
There’s always a reason you are drawn to something. Don’t let it get it away!
1. Errr, I'm not flexible.
It’s easy to see why this might keep you astray from practicing yoga, but flexibility has nothing to do with it! Each pose has a variation for where you are that day. If you can’t reach the floor without bending your knees today, then don’t stress. If you reached the floor today, then don’t get crazy excited either! Whether you are new to the game or have been practicing for years, every day is different.
Some days are radiant, while others might be a little low, but we just try our best each day and create our own flow. There are many lessons to be learned while practicing on the mat. The beauty of it all is seen when you take what you have learned during your practice and apply it to the other areas in your life.
2. Oh, it's actually because I'm too busy.
If your excuse for anything at all in life runs along the lines of being too busy, then that’s even more of a reason to pencil time in! If getting into yoga has been a thought of yours, then turn it into action. Find a class before work, during lunch, after class, etc..
One of the coolest benefits in yoga is feeling and finding your stillness. In a world that is always running, it’s a gift to slow down at times.
3. Never mind, it’s just out of my budget.
First, think about how you spend your money. Is it on that grande iced latte every day before class or on a quick trip to the local pizzeria? If you are okay with making small changes, then you will notice your money going toward valuable experiences rather than disposable items. This doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with lattes or pizza, but don't sell yourself short either.
If that doesn’t help, then don't forget about those handy DVD’s. You’ll even be able to practice in the comfort of your own home.
4. Uhm, the yoga studio is intimidating.
Refer to the end of number three. The studio can feel intimidating for a new yogi, trust me, I know this feeling! Fear is nothing but a story in your head. What’s the worst that’s going to happen?! If you fall, then get up. If you fart, well, so does everyone else. If you make a friend, then here’s a high five. Wait. What if you run out of water? Bring an extra bottle next time. No problem is too big for you to handle.
5. No, but I’m not a hipster millennial who eats acai bowls.
Love is for everyone. Music is for everyone. Yoga is for everyone. If you want to do yoga, then insert Nike’s slogan right here. If you want to go run naked at the mall, then just remember that not all thoughts should be acted upon.
Maybe the media portrays yoga as a practice for a certain type of person, but that’s not what this world needs. The world needs you to do what you want to do. Whether you are a 40-year-old man or a 26-year-old woman, yoga won't judge and neither should you.
