Homecoming Week, a week dedicated to alumni and students, is filled with activities and steeped in tradition. Whenever you're a student, however, things can get a little tricky.
Here are the top three Homecoming Week struggles, and, if you play your cards right, advantages that lie within them:
1. Pomping
For those of you who aren't necessarily well-versed in the area of tissue paper crafting, let me explain. Pomping is where people roll up little squares of tissue paper and glue them onto giant wooden structures to decorate the lawn for the day of the homecoming game and parade. Yes, it sucks having to get a certain amount of pomping hours done, and yes, sometimes your hands start to blister and bleed from the surprisingly abrasive tissue paper, but it really is one of the best times to get to know people in your chapter that you might not have met otherwise!
When your only form of entertainment is a gallon jug of white glue and 90's Pandora, you really have no option than to bond with whoever is next to you. Shoutout to required pomping hours for facilitating some hilarious conversations.
2. Parents
Any college student can tell you that, after a certain point, you just get used to not having adults around anymore. Your verbal filter deteriorates, and you become accustomed to no one holding you accountable for anything. Since the homecoming game rigorously encourages the attendance of both students and alumni, however, there are significantly more parents tailgating than during a regular season home game. While, yes, it's irritating trying not to physically trip over all the young children and mentally stumble over your words, you can put your mooching skills to good use and get some free food and alcohol out of the situation.
3. Tailgates at the Fraternity Houses
One of the most beautiful things about tailgating at LSU is that everything (for the most part) is centrally located. For homecoming, however, most of the tailgates move from the Parade Grounds to the fraternity houses for alumni and family events. Since parents and graduates attend the house tailgates, everyone is on their best behavior. This is a great time to appreciate the beauty of LSU's fraternity houses while they're clean (and while they actually have toilet paper).
So, tigers, I hope you found the silver in your Homecoming week struggles, and I hope you enjoyed the weekend that followed. From College GameDay to storming the field, I'd say it was a success. What's next on the agenda? #BeatBama.
