What to expect for your first year of college

Top 10 Things To Know About Capital
Neal Maxson

To the upcoming first years at Capital University, I will do the best of my ability to tell you some of the things you should expect for your first year of college.

1. The Conservatory is taken very seriously

Anything that the students can always agree on is that the "Con" is the heart and soul of our school. It accounts for the majority of our students. It is the highest funded part of our school. An arts gen ed class is required, so there is a probability you will have a class in the (easy to get lost in) Conservatory. I myself take "Introduction to Rock & Roll" and would recommend it to anyone who is debating which gen ed to take.

2. There is no cussing at sporting events

Now, I am not going to lie. I am about as foul-mouthed as a sailor. This makes keeping my mouth shut at something I am passionate about very difficult. However, you will be given a warning for cursing at sporting events. This is with good reason—you are at a sporting event to support your team, not bring the other team down.

3. Whitehall and Livingston aren't that bad

I personally grew up in Wapakoneta, pretty close to Lima, OH. Lima is pretty horrifying if you find yourself at the wrong place at the wrong time. Glee made Lima look like a really happy and small community. It's not. If you stay on Broad/Main Street and keep driving, you'll be fine. I recommend locking your doors and windows to be safe, but sometimes you just want to live on the edge. I understand.

4. Our Christmas lights are great

Now, this one might be kind of weird, but around Christmas, you can't miss the Christmas lights that are put up around the fountains. I wish I could have seen them in the snow this winter. However, I am a Browns fan, so I am always looking forward to next year.

5. The fountains are a place of peace

If you ever need a place to break down at two in the morning under the stress and pressure of finals, the fountains are the place to be. During the day, you'll always find someone there working on homework or trying to get you to buy something. I always thought that it was real cliche to say how, "Oh, the fountains are so great." After breaking down under the pressure of stress and pressure due to finals, I understand now.

6. Networking is available

Join a frat, sorority or whatever. You will get plenty of opportunities to meet other people and get your name out there. Political science majors can get jobs at the state house. Music tech majors will get to travel. The opportunities are present and endless. Take advantage of them.

7. The People of Cap

Whether you want to admit it or not, you are a part of the #CapFam. You'll never say #CapFam seriously, though; it will always be in a joking matter. Our campus is so small, you will see everybody. There will be people you have multiple classes with. That hot girl you saw at the fountains? There is a probability you will see her at the MDR later.

8. Columbus is one (fun filled) bus ride away

Thursday nights, take the drunk bus to Park Street. Just do it once. I promise you will enjoy the bus ride. Really though, downtown Columbus has so many great places. You can experience downtown Columbus, the Short North and German Village all in a short car trip.

9. You'll make friends for life

You'll hear this no matter where you go, but I am a proud member of the best damn frat around, and I have made the best friends that I will ever make through that. Capital is a great place. I promise you that you will make great friends and meet great people here.

10. The parking sucks

It's horrible. End of story.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
