If you're anything like me, there have been a few television shows that you've had to say goodbye to...and it definitely hurt. Luckily, Netflix makes it so that we don't have to say goodbye to these shows. At least, not really. So, here are the top 10 shows that are no longer on the air, but are currently streaming on Netflix.
Honorable Mentions
I couldn't complete this list without giving a shout out to two of my favorite shows.
"One Tree Hill," a drama that follows the lives of teenagers at Tree Hill High School and stars Chad Michael Murray, James Lafferty, and Sophia Bush,
and "Private Practice," the spin-off of medical drama Grey's Anatomy. Private Practice tells the story of what happened to Dr. Addison Montgomery, played by Kate Walsh when she left Seattle and joined Oceanside Wellness group. Audra McDonald, Taye Diggs, Tim Daly, Amy Brenneman, and Caterina Scorsone also star.
Now, without further ado..
10. "Nikita"
If you've never seen or heard of "Nikita," you are not alone. In this CW hit, Maggie Q takes on the role of a rogue assassin determined to take down the secret organization that trained her. The series only had four seasons, but the first couple were always intense and action packed. Other stars include Lyndsy Fonseca, Shane West, and Melinda Clarke.
9. "30 Rock"
Okay, seriously. Who doesn't love Tina Fey? Before "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," Fey was lending her insane comedic talent to this NBC comedy. And who doesn't love when art imitates life? Well, in this half-hour comedy, Fey plays Liz Lemon, the head writer of a sketch comedy series. It's not like she has any experience doing that. The show also stars Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski, Alec Baldwin, and Jack McBrayer.
8. "Friday Night Lights"
Who says you can't go back to high school? For 5 seasons, the small town of Dillon, Texas occupied a large space in our hearts as this town's football players spent their days on the field and their nights getting into all sorts of trouble. But, of course, Coach Eric Taylor, played by Kyle Chandler, was always there to remind us of my personal favorite mantra: "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose." Connie Britton, Aimee Teegarden, and Taylor Kitsch also star.
7. "How I Met Your Mother"
Have you ever wondered how exactly your father met your mother? Well, Ted Moseby's kids sure don't anymore. Over the span of nine seasons, Josh Radnor plays Ted, an architect and very descriptive story teller, as he recounts to his children the journey him and his group of friends took that led up to him meeting their mother. Plus, the series is told completely through flashbacks, which is always fun. This comedy also includes regulars Neil Patrick Harris, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan, and Jason Segel.
6. "Parenthood"
Nobody knows what it's like to have a "dysfunctional" family quite like the Braverman clan. When this heartwarming series picks up, Sarah Braverman, played by Lauren Graham, is moving back into her childhood home with her two kids after her marriage fails. This drama explores the lives of Sarah, her siblings, and her parents as they all struggle to figure out what it means to be parents and how to overcome the tragedy in their lives. If you're a fan of tear-jerking family drama, this one is definitely for you. This show also stars Peter Krause, Dax Shepard, Monica Potter, Erika Christensen, Mae Whitman, and Craig T. Nelson.
5. "The Office"
Have you ever made a "that's what she said" joke without really knowing where the joke came from? Well, lucky for you, Netflix is streaming all 9 seasons of this mockumentary-style comedy. Steve Carell plays Michael Scott, the regional manager of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch. The series follows a group of his employees during their workdays, and it includes hilarious scenes of pranks, fighting, and all around inappropriate behavior. Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer and Mindy Kaling are among the few stars who contribute to the antics of Dunder Mifflin.
4. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"
Hopefully, you aren't thinking of Twilight, because if you are, you are very far off. Buffy Summers, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, is a teenage girl destined to slay vampires, demons, and other forces of darkness. She is constantly balancing fighting evil with passing high school. Of course, she couldn't do it without the help of her friends. This fantasy drama by Joss Whedon also has a comedic side and stars Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Stewart Head, Michelle Trachtenberg, and David Boreanaz.
3. "Friends"
There are quite a few people who haven't seen this series all the way through, and if you're one of them, you should seriously reconsider your life choices. In case you aren't aware, this '90s comedy follows a group of six friends living in Manhattan as they struggle with work, parenting, and their love lives. The series stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer.
2. "Gilmore Girls"
This show practically invented the term dramedy. Although it is classified as a drama, Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel play the zany and always witty Lorelai and Rory Gilmore (respectively). This fast-paced mother-daughter duo live in the small town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, and the story explores the journey of Lorelai being a single mother in her 30s raising a teenage daughter. And of course, they are both only slightly addicted to coffee. Also starring are Scott Patterson, Melissa McCarthy, Kelly Bishop, Edward Hermann, Liza Weil, and Jared Padalecki.
And the number one spot goes to...*drum roll*
1. "Parks & Recreation"
We lost this mockumentary comedy this past year, and believe me when I tell you it literally broke my heart. Starring Amy Poehler, this series follows Leslie Knope, the Deputy Director of the Parks & Recreation Department in Pawnee, Indiana, and her team of misfits as they try to create change in their messed up town. What you won't find in any description of this show is the amount of heart that is instilled in this show, yet it still somehow has the ability to make you laugh until you cry. And trust me, you'll be doing plenty of both. This series also includes Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, Adam Scott, and Rob Lowe.
