Social media has officially taken over the world. The strangest things can go viral in a matter of seconds. America, and the rest of the world, become obsessed with hashtags and trends that nobody can really explain. Here is a ranking of the most pointless things that went viral in the past year.
There must have been someone somewhere that started this trend. Binge watching TV shows and movies is no longer a solo activity. The “Netflix and chill” trend has changed the dating game forever.
9. Left Shark
Thank you Katy Perry for having shark mascots dance around you while you sang "Teenage Dream" at the Superbowl. Because of you we have an unnecessary appreciation for sharks that tend to spend most of their time on the left and dance completely out of synch.
8. #ThingsWhitePeopleDo

While this hashtag is seemingly pointless, it has produced some funny tweets. But it neglects the fact that #thingswhitepeopledo are often just things all people do. Somehow it’s more entertaining when white people do dumb things.
7. DJ Khaled
Famous musician DJ Khaled became an overnight Snapchat sensation with his “keys to success” series. He names seemingly mundane things as “keys” to success. Now he’s writing a book. Turns out he didn’t go viral for nothing and we can now all learn from him for years to come.
6. #Basic
Everything is basic. Drinking coffee, wearing certain clothes, making certain faces. Well, we might as well all be basic because we all do these things the same. #Basic can pretty much be used to caption any picture at this point and it seems to be a viral trend that is sticking around for a while.
5. The Condom Challenge
#thingswhitepeopledo. But seriously who thought of this? Videos of people filling a condom full of water and dropping it on someone’s head have taken over the Internet. In case this didn’t already seem like a bad idea, a lot of people who tried this challenge ended up injured.
4. Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge.
The Kardashians go viral no matter what they do. Lately, young Kylie has gotten a lot of attention for her less-than-normal lip size. Of course America took this opportunity to create a viral challenge in which people put a shot glass on their lips and sucked in air. When they took the shot glass off their lips were three times the size of Kylie’s on a good day. Also dangerous, also pointless.
3. Alex from Target
One photo of an attractive teenager that works at Target and the Internet went ballistic. There was nothing special about this boy other than he was good-looking and worked at Target. Naturally he became famous in a matter of minutes and got to go on "The Ellen Show." Good work, Twitter.
2. The dress
White and gold, or blue and black? The world may never know. But EVERYONE had an opinion on this mind-bending dress. One innocent girl sends a picture of a dress to her friend and next thing you know, #TheDress is a Halloween costume.
1. Damn Daniel
This is the latest, greatest and most pointless of all. Daniel, a completely average high school freshman, was called out for his good looks and white Vans on a video. This video circulated the Internet globe and made Daniel (and his white Vans) an overnight sensation. Good to know talented singers can work their whole lives and never achieve fame, but Daniel can go to school in his white Vans and wind up on "Ellen."
