If your family is anything like mine, you all can’t get through a family function without quoting at least three movies, and they’re usually comedies. My family has taught me everything I know about inserting a movie quote into any conversation at any time especially for a good laugh. Despite the fact that we usually know what’s coming, we continue to use these quotes at holidays and family parties year after year. Here are some of our favorite movies to quote.
- National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. While this is a Christmas movie, it has quotes appropriate for every season, because “It is goo-od.” Being able to quote this movie is “the gift that keeps on giving.” And Cousin Eddie is arguably the most quotable character of all time.
- Wedding Crashers. Who hasn’t heard of a Stage-Five Clinger? Plus, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson will have you rolling on the floor with laughter, and you get to see Bradley Cooper before he was a big star.
- Elf. Again a Christmas movie, but I’m pretty sure I hear people yelling, “Son of a nutcracker” all year long. This movie never fails to make me smile, and “I like smiling. Smiling’s my favorite.” And now that it’s officially Christmas time anyway, everyone knows “the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”
- Airplane. Surely you know I’m serious when I say this is one of the most quotable movies of all time. And don’t call me Shirley.
- My Cousin Vinny. All members of the j-j-jury can agree this hilarious movie made you want to stomp your heeled boot in a velvet jumpsuit like Marisa Tomei just to tell your boyfriend your biological clock was…stomp…stomp…stomp ticking!
- Old School. Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn make another appearance on the list in this classic. Vince Vaughn’s quick wit and Will Ferrell’s ridiculousness just get me every time. And poor Blue didn’t stand a chance in that wrestling match. “You’re my boy Blue!”
- 21 Jump Street. “Are you one strappin it or two strappin it?” Isn’t that the kind of question that burdens every high schooler? Or is it really all about fitting in like it was for Jonah Hill the first time around and Channing Tatum the second time around?
- White Chicks. “You were thinking it.” “But you said it.” How could I not include this Wayans brothers’ classic on this list? And by the end of this movie, I’m always in the mood to “Go shopping!!”
- Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. What would this list be without “Bueller…Bueller….Bueller.”
- The Wizard of Oz. Perhaps the most classic movie of all time with the most classic line for anyone that’s ever gotten lost ever, “Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore.”
So if you’re looking for something funny to whip out at your next family function or casual get-together, pop in any of these ten movies before you go so you have some good stuff to say. Maybe whoever you’re trying out these lines on will think you’re a big movie buff too.
