Top 10 Indie Pop Artists To Look Out For: January
Drifting Lexi

Here I am, yet again bringing you the latest and greatest indie pop artists destined for popularity. I've mulled through hundreds of producers, bands, and artists to bring to you the cream of the crop for this month. So please, grab a decent pair of headphones or a nice stereo system and check these guys out. Your new favorite song is somewhere in this article...

10. Aquilo

Sounds like: a really ambient and soothing Jaymes Young

This duo from the Lake District in the UK has some of the most relaxing pop music I've ever listened to. With strong piano melodies, echoing voices, and subtle backing synths that make this song sound like it's being played by an army of musicians. Most of their songs, and "You There" in particular, are incredibly beautiful. There's so much going on, and the depth is what gets me when it comes to Aquilo.

9. Steve James

Sounds like: Kygo-type deep house, but a little more bouncy

Steve James has definitely seen some fame via Soundcloud over the last year he's been producing music, but with his first original track, we see him finally leak over into Spotify, accumulating over 2 million listens in under a month, which is incredible. But it's all so well-deserved, because his music rejuvinates a somewhat tired genre, adding a cool hook and pop vocals (provided by the young, rising American pop single Clairity) to a mix of future and house. I'm really hoping the success of "Renaissance" encourages Steve James to release more originals sooner than later.

8. Retro Culture

Sounds like: The Glitch Mob and an 80s synth-wave band joined forces

If you brought 80s electronic music to today, it would be Retro Culture. Combining modern vocal manipulation with analog synthesizers, this Melbourne band knows exactly what they want to sound like. Elements of deep and chilled electronic accent their style, which sounds a bit like what you'd hear in the background of a scene in a movie where someone is on a long journey through a wasteland.

7. The Erised

Sounds like: Lana Del Rey-type instrumentals, but with a less intimidating vocalist

I'm proud to say I stumbled across The Erised the day they released their first single, and I've been hooked on them since. Finally, with the release of a new EP, a signing with Med School label, and hints of a debut album, this six-piece London band may finally get the notice they deserve. Plastered with the electronic production of acoustic instruments and some 808 beats, this band is chilled enough to serve without ice. Albeit, some of their new stuff is more heavily based on synths, it'll be interesting to see them evolve.

6. Grizfolk

Sounds like: The Colourist, Sir Sly, and those cool cats

Although "Bob Marley" is the song that's currently climbing the rising charts, I think that "The Struggle", even though it's three years old, is a better introduction to this pop-folk band. If you like Southern accents, guitars, synths, and strong a drumbeat, you're gonna love Grizfolk.

5. Magic Giant

Sounds like: literally if Mumford & Sons got the lead singer of Plain White T's to sing for them

How could you not love a band like this? The mix of banjos, acoustic guitars, and pretty-boy pop vocals gives this band a very clear chance at fame. If you like this, then you'll love the other five songs they've released. NPR really likes these guys, saying they're destined for festival anthem greatness, so really it's next question when it comes to this L.A. trio.

4. EZA

Sounds like: See Aquilo, but with a female singer

EZA actually saw one of my blog posts about her about a year ago and she contacted me giving me a bit of history about herself. Naturally, I was thrilled to see that "Burning House" was on the rise just after its release on December 11th. It's tough to stand out in Nashville, but I think EZA has the talent for it.

3. Coast Modern

Sounds like: Vacationer, but with some really strong 808s

Yeah, Coast Modern is hands down my favorite new artist this month. They only have this one song, but its incredibly catchy. It combines two of my favorite things in an indie pop song: surf rock and hip-hop beats. Of course, Coast Modern is a west coast band, and the only reason they aren't number one is because any noteable fame won't be achieved anytime soon, but I was too into them to wait.

2. Lostboycrow

Sounds like: Fall Out Boy vocals meets Passion Pit.

"Powers" is the current hit, but I think "Say You Want Me" is the best introduction to this LA dark pop artist. Dark pop is definitely on the rise, with a ton of emerging artists specializing in the synth-based melancholy style. Lostboycrow might be one of the modern artists at the forefront of this movement. Or, at least, his sound is begging for him to be.

1. Charley Marley

Sounds like: New Politics with more hip-hop

This London rapper is probably the closest thing to pure pop that I've ever posted, but I've fallen in love with Charley Marley's sound over the course of the last week. Between the accent and the catchy beat, "Wonka Bar" has burrowed its way into my brain, probably being one of the catchiest songs I've ever heard. It's a new style of hip-pop and it's definitely only a matter of time before you hear Charley Marley on the radio. Seriously, be careful with this single, the sax sample is nearly impossible to forget, I've tried.

As always, the Spotify playlist has been updated, so subscribe away:

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
