If you have yet to watch the video for DNCE's single Toothbrush, do so, for i swear it is the start of a change in our society.
The video for DNCE's new single, "toothbrush", features plus size model Ashley Graham getting cozy next to our boy Joe Jonas. Very cozy.
The video is like a sneak peak to the day in the life of an ordinary couple. From play fighting, to dancing in their underwear, to casual glances that turn into smiles while watching late night movies; if you've ever been in love, it will most definitely hit home.
Ashley Graham has become a rising role model within recent times; Ashley is a "plus size" model and body activist. Her name was widely publicized when picture of her next to her friend, that is deemed a regular size model, received controversial back lash and subsequently went viral. Since then, Graham has become the face of a movement; she has been posted on campaigns such as #ImNoAngel, and just recently was the first "curvy model" to make the cover of sports illustrated.
Mallory Schlossberg, writer for Business Insider, states "If Sports Illustrated — a magazine that targets men — could classify Graham as beautiful, then that marked a huge step for curvy women"
However we have all seen videos and ads trying to explain, justify and fight for the "plus size" woman. However it is this, it is a music video for a new hit single, that is going to change everything.
Think of it this way;
in a world where we are trying to normalize the idea of homosexuality to children, what is going to do it. A book titled "Jimmy has two dads and that is okay", or just a book about "Jimmy's first day of school" where his dads both walk him to the bus stop? When we are trying to change our society, and normalize something ,accept something, the best way to do so is to well, normalize it. For the young generations to be bombarded by "this is okay" , "this needs to be accepted" etc. this does nothing more than make them question why it wouldn't be accepted in the first place.
My professor once said to me when speaking about his daughter "never tell a little girl that she can do or become anything she wants, because until you say that she had never questioned it."
This music video is the kick-start to something amazing. We are normalizing this aspect of society that so desperately needs to be normalized on a large scale platform, and that is something for us all to be proud of.
American media did something right for once y'all.
