Last month, Tommy Wiseau, king of bad movies, stated that he was interested in directing Fantastic Four 2, the sequel to what is being hailed as the worst movie of the year. For those who do not know, Tommy Wiseau is a cult hero and widely known in the film community as the director, writer and star of what is known as the worst movie ever made. That film is titled, "The Room" and is, without a doubt, a personal favorite of mine. That film has the unique quality of encapsulating so much while being about absolutely nothing. If I meet someone who hasn’t seen "The Room", I tell that that they need to witness the God awful power of its beauty. Here are some links to its brilliant wisdom.
I was not interested in seeing Fantastic Four when the first couple of trailers were released. Sure, I was intrigued, but I wasn’t planning to buy tickets for opening night. When the first bad reviews came in, I thought, “Aw, man. Guess I’m not seeing it.” And then, the rest of the reviews came in. Not the ones saying it was a poor quality movie. The ones saying that this may be one of the worst superhero movies in years. Those were the ones that, when I read them, I immediately thought, “Oh my God, I need to see this.” This made me think. If it was just moderately bad, then I have no interest. But if it’s horrifically bad? Sign me up. I’ll see it twice, I’ll buy the DVD, I’ll quote it regularly. That’s just something that has entered my personality as I get older.
The worse the movie, the more joy I’ll probably get out of seeing it. And I’m not talking about "Sharknado", which isn’t actually a series of bad movies and is, rather, a series of movies made to be bad. I mean movies that were supposed to be good and just… aren’t. Those are the movies that I will willingly pay money to see. For example, last year I spent money to go the theatre and see "Saving Christmas" (Kirk Cameron’s attempt at a Christmas picture), "Exists" (a found footage Bigfoot horror film) and "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" (a sign of the oncoming apocalypse).
Why? I can’t really tell you. I like to justify it by saying that the reason I watch bad movies is to learn how to not make bad movies myself. Yet, I feel like the real reason is the same reason some people watch reality television. It’s simply just a train wreck that I can’t look away from.
So, that’s why Mr. Wiseau should direct the next Fantastic Four. Because, honestly, it can’t get much worse. And what better way to actually get people into the theater than by assuring them that spending their money on this steaming pile of garbage is worth their time? Everybody needs a disaster to watch every once in a while and Tommy does it best.
