To those battling cancer,
I'm very sorry that this battle has been given to you. No one should ever have to go through with what you're going through -- even if the "strong ones" are the ones who receive it. It always seems like the best people are the ones who end with cancer -- the ones who smile every day and are just happy to be alive. So why in the world would this happen to you? Why did your body decide to attack itself, to try and kill you? Why does it seem as if the people who are there for everyone else are the ones who have to suffer when there are other people out there who deserve this pain more than you do. It's not fair. You don't deserve this and you are allowed to get upset and mad about. You don't have to put a brave face on for those who love you; we are just as angry that this happened to you. Please scream and cry and let your anger out, but please don't ever give up. You didn't deserve this but I know you are strong enough to get through this.
I know you have a very long battle ahead of you. And you have no idea how much I wish I could switch places with you. I know you're in pain and that chemo sucks so much but I'll be there to give you amazingly cool hats when you hair falls out so don't worry too much. And I really want to steal all your fuzzy and warm hospital socks (they better give you a ton of pairs when you finally get out of there). I know you're worried about the future -- and if the cancer is going to win -- but remember cancer is only given to those who are strong enough to fight it, no matter how much bull crap that is.
Please plan fun trips and things to do once you are out of chemo. You'll make it there if you keep trying and fighting. Your life is not over; you're just going to be sick for a while. Please just remember I'll always be there for you. I'm going to come and surprise visit you any chance I get and it's not because I feel like I have to, it's because I love you and want to be there for you. Please don't feel as if you'll ever be out of the loop. I'll always be there to tell you how stupid school is, the new nonsense thing America is doing and all the pointless gossip about those stupid celebrities. I'll bring you food and books I find funny that you should read, but remember you can tell me they suck because it's not your job to spare my feelings. Don't ever feel like you need to text me and say thank you. I know chemo is taking a lot of energy out of you and I'm not doing these things for a thank you. I mean it when I say call me if you need anything, even when you're bored and need someone to talk to. And if I come to visit, it's okay to tell me to leave if you aren't up for it or to sleep. I'm there because I love you, not so you can entertain me.
I want you to remember that you aren't going through this alone and you have tons of people on your side to help you fight this battle. There are going to be bad days and days that you feel like giving up, but we will be there to remind you why you're still fighting. Don't fight for us, we are already doing that for you. Fight for yourself because you deserve a longer life than cancer is trying to give you. It's OK to cry and share your worries with us. We are here to help carry the load. But remember that you didn't deserve this and it's not fair. Get pissed and kick cancer in the butt. You can do it. And I'll always be here to remind you. You are never a burden and you are never alone. You've got this and together we are going to kick cancer down. And you're going to be around to see your kids grow up and get married, to see all the dumb stuff us kids are doing, and to see all the advancement in technology. You're going to do it. I believe in you. It is true that cancer is given to those who can fight it, and although its unfair, you can do it. Together we can do it. I love you and always will. No matter what.
Love,
Your loved ones
