This is perhaps one of the hardest things I have had to write for the past 20 years, and that includes when I came out to my friends and family.
I don't even know what to say. How could something like this happen in this country? How could a candidate with the most votes, still lose to an ignorant, bigoted, misogynistic, sexist man?
For the past 12 hours, countless friends and family members have called me in tears, wondering what will happen to them or their families next. The fear that undocumented students and families have is so real. Families are being torn apart, children have ended up without parents and parents without children because of these policies that have been passed and implemented throughout many U.S. Presidents, including Barack Obama.
Why this angers and scares me the most right now is that not only are these policies coming from congress, but they were the very forefront of the campaign for Donald Trump. This is what he used to gain voters and what he did in order to win the Presidency.
Many people have told my generation that our votes count and that they matter and that we should continue to exercise our right to vote, but after what happened last night, you can't blame my generation for not wanting to be a part of the political process.
No, this isn't a rant about Hillary Clinton losing, it is about Donald Trump winning and what that showed people of underrepresented communities about the United States last night. Regardless of the progress we have made in this country; marriage equality, having a black president, or anything else that anyone could name, we just literally saw a vast majority of white folks (and other POC's don't get me wrong) spit in the faces of anyone who fought for that progress to be made. I refuse to believe that a Trump Presidency could result in anything positive. His entire campaign was nothing but ableist, narcissistic, ignorant BS that only further divided us.
I know on my part, this post is only the beginning of my actions to make sure that Donald Trump knows he's #NotMyPresident. Within the coming weeks, I will organize with other friends, families, and community members in an effort to produce demonstrations that call out the type of man the U.S. elected as President last night.
