Let me introduce myself. I am a human and I crave attention. I'm not sure if we even know what that is anymore. Our attention spans are about as great as a goldfish thanks to our friend technology.
uh-ten-shuh n
a. "a concentration of the mind on a single object or thought, especially one preferentially selected from a complex, with a view to limiting or clarifying receptivity by narrowing the range of stimuli." (Dictionary.com)
To put those 32 words short, NOT A PHONE AND A HUMAN. Pick one.
I'm convinced that there is no such thing as being alone in this era. And even more so, no such thing as being together either.
My phone has become my closest friend.
Jokes aside...My phone, Fiona, accompanies me on late night drives, get's me from place to place, and even interrupts conversations I have with real people (gasp), yes, real people. Turns out they aren't really paying any attention either. And this should scare you.
Cyber space is more interesting than your presence, your thoughts, your feelings, and your needs as a human when a phone is used around others. Sin separates us from God; phones can separate us from each other.
Phones are both the synonyms and antonyms of the word "curse."
Let me give you three visual descriptions:
1.) You have been waiting to honestly talk to someone and they finally ask how you are doing, picking their phones up as the words cross their tongue.
*I'm doing great, thanks for asking.
2.) You want someone to experience what you have, so you invite them over to watch your favorite movie, trying to engage them in your world. They get comfortable on the couch and raise their screens to their faces.
* I'm glad you liked the movie.
3.) The classic.
You haven't seen your hometown friends in ages and you get invited to dinner with them. Instead of conversing like they did in the dinosaur age, you all end up snapchatting to the world that you are all finally together again.
* Are we really? We have a few extra guests at the table.
In case the point wasn't made with words, here are some visual scenarios:
Does the last image look familiar? Let's not allow an animated movie to become our reality.
The real world is pretty darn great. It was created by God's spoken word. You too have a voice. I hope you set the cyber down and get to experience the different accents and tones of real people; while you see real places and real things. Co-exist with your fellow humans. Give people your attention, it's worth more than a "like."
Don't be a Zombie.
