Dear Professor,
I understand to be where you are today you went through 7+ years of higher education. I know that you struggled through years of being a starving artist just trying to get the word out about your pieces. I grasp the fact that you're in your late 50's and have never been married before, nor ever plan on being married. I recognize the genuine annoyance you feel whenever you look upon our sub-par work. I deduce the amount of pure hate you hold towards students who think they are your equal. I fully sympathize with all of these inquiries about you. However, I disapprove of your lack of heart and passion towards teaching when you decide to absently remove yourself from class for about an hour every day because you don't feel like showing us how to do things.
It's one thing when a teacher tries really hard, but in all facts of the matter is just a poor teacher. Its a whole other thing when a teacher, who if fluent and has mastered the subject at hand, just doesn't want or feel the need to teach to his students. I don't know where you get off thinking that this is acceptable behavior, but I will have you know that I am not paying $1,500 a semester, out of pocket, for you not to be putting your heart and soul into teaching me fundamentals. It is just plain disrespectful to me and other students when you just leave without saying anything and you're gone for an hour. What do we do if we have questions? How do we solve our problems if we don't even know the source of our issue? Questions, that we as students can't answer for ourselves, arise during the class period that need solutions. We as students can't improve our state of education and knowledge without being taught the material.
I know that society likes to make us believe that if our teacher doesn't teach us something that we should just teach ourselves, but I don't think society has a rational grasp on how unbelievably hard it is to teach yourself sometimes. So hypothetically consider this: society wants us to get a job and pay our own bills, become active members in our society such as volunteering, and finish and receive a degree from a higher education institute. Each of these tasks that society wants us to complete has their own list of sub tasks to accomplish said task. So to get a job and help pay for bills, you have to make a schedule for your job, spend 5 hour shifts completing menial tasks to better your job performance, and if you work retail then constantly deal with impolite and audacious customers during your shifts. That means that when it comes to getting a degree in a high education, Society wants us to not only take between 12-18 credit hours a semester, not including extra time outside of class for homework and projects, but also have to proficiently teach our self the material in said class without the guidance or assistance of the professor. I don't know about any of you guys, but this is a load of full throttle crap to me.
I don't expect a miracle to happen overnight, nor do I expect for you to spend time teaching us material outside of class. However, if you can't dedicate to us a full 3 hours twice a week to teach us fundamentals, then you need to find a new job. Obviously, students have chosen to take this class so that we can graduate with our designated major. We didn't choose to take you, we decided to fulfill our major requirement and get on with our lives. So it would be greatly appreciated if you taught us the material we need to know to be successful in our major.
Sincerely,
The Student Who Wants To Graduate
