To The Person I Hope To Become

Even though I wish all of these blessings for you and your future life, what I wish most of all is for you to be happy.

To The Person I Hope To Become

We try not to use the word “perfect” too much because we say that there is no such thing as perfection. But we all have an idea of what the perfect version of ourselves would be. We all thrive to be that person. With a little reflection and change, I really do believe we can come close to where we want to be.

That’s why I’m here, writing to you, the perfect version of myself...the person I hope to become.

I know that things can be tough, as anybody's life is. But I know that you will be strong enough to get through it. You might not realize it now, but you are very strong and I’m sure many people look up to you. I know I would.

I’m also hoping that, along with strength, you’ve found your confidence as well. I know it’s hard. I also know life can be so much better with it and I’m sure you will find it. There’s nothing that should be holding you back from seeing what an amazing person you are!

Then there’s your career I’d like to talk about. We’ve struggled with this idea quite a bit, too. We've been constantly doubting what we may or may not want to do, and changing our mind and thinking about several different career paths.

I hope you found what makes you the happiest every day. I don’t want work to be a chore for you; I want work to not feel like work. Whether you’re a kindergartener teacher, a writer, or a veterinarian, I hope you are doing what you love.

I hope that you have found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. I hope you are completely smitten and in love with him, and that you have no doubt he is your soulmate.

I cannot wait to see your home with him. I know you’re always looking at home interior designs on Pinterest and Wanelo, so I have no doubt that once you have a home of your own, it will look spectacular. Even if your children make a mess of it, which they will, I can’t wait to meet those little people.

Even though I wish all of these blessings for you and your future life, what I wish most of all is for you to be happy. You were granted an entire lifetime when you were born into this world, and I wouldn’t want you to waste a minute of that life miserably. Life can be so wonderful and beautiful when you are happy, and I so badly hope that you are.

I hope all the best for you.

Sincerely,

Your 18-year-old self

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
