Moms and Dads,
With the new school year approaching, your emotions are starting to get the best of you. Your little girl or boy is starting a new chapter of their life, or leaving home again for another semester away. Just when you were getting used to us being home, we are leaving again.
Every time you hear us talk about going back to campus, you may be thinking that we don't need you anymore. But, we do. We need your guidance, your homemade food, and your love. We may be away, but that doesn't mean we don't need you. We need your pep talks before a big game or test. We need your advice when it comes to relationships, life, becoming an adult, and so much more. We just need you. It may not seem like we want to be home anymore once move-in day grows closer, but deep down inside, we are actually sad to leave. We won't be waking up in our own bed, or having family dinners. For me, family time is everything, and that is one thing that I will miss for sure.
When you see us getting excited to leave for school, just know we are ready to be on our own. Ready to find ourselves somewhere new, ready to experience new things and meet new people. Going from living at home and having you around, to leaving the nest and growing up may be challenging at first, but we are ready. Growing up means succeeding and also making mistakes. Even though you want to pick us up when we fall, letting us find out the hard way will allow us to become the adults you raised us to be.
We may be away for a few months at a time, but just know we will always be your little girls or boys. We will always be the kids you remember as toddlers or babies. While those memories will remain, new ones will be made. Whether we are near or far, we will always find out way back home.
To my parents as I go away to start my junior year, I want to say thank you. Thank you for being amazing role models, showing me how to tackle life, and become the young adult you want me to be. Though I may make mistakes along the way, your love is unconditional. The advice you have given me since I've started college has been nothing but genuine. Everything I do is for both of you, and I hope I am making you proud.
With love,
A College Student
