To The Mom Of My Friend Group

To the unsung heros...

To The Mom Of My Friend Group
Odyssey

Mother's Day just passed and we all lauded our mothers with breakfast in bed, brunch downtown, or a tear-inducing collage on social media. Our mothers deserve all of this praise, as they did kind of keep us healthy, clothed, and fed for at least 18 years. But there is another group of people who we should also take time to appreciate during this Mother's Day season...the mom of our friend group. So here are just a few things that we have to thank our moms away from moms for...

1. Thank you for being "no fun."

If you are the mom of the friend group, you never drink even on the rare occasion that the rest of the squad has dragged you out with us. And while we may tease you or call you no fun, we secretly appreciate that someone will make sure we remember to drink water and will ensure that we don't drive home ourselves.

2. Thank you for judging us.

If anyone else did this to one of us, they would be labeled a Class A b**ch, but because it's you, you get away with it. It is completely acceptable for the mom of the group to call us out on our drunken decisions, neglect of schoolwork, and various lazy or irresponsible behavior. And when you do say something, we may roll our eyes or say "You're such a mom," but we low-key listen to you and think about getting our lives together.

3. Thank you for having different priorities.

Whether it's a big marathon weekend of frat parties, or the next season of our favorite show premiering on Netflix, we find any and every reason not to focus on school. If you're the mom of the friend group, you are basically always reviewing for an exam or getting ahead on homework. And while we poke fun at your studious ways, it inspires us to get to work sometimes, or at least reminds us that we actually do have an assignment due that day.

4. Thank you for being bossy.

While we love being "grown" and "independent," we really do need someone to set us straight on occasion. If you're the mom of the friend group, you probably just lose it every once in a while and spell out to us exactly why we are failures at life. And our feelings get a tad hurt for one little minute, but then we realize you're right, and we stop going back to the stupid boy or we start actually going to that 8 a.m. class again, and we never thank you for it, though we should.

5. Thank you for doing the dirty work.

Do we even have to go through the list? Holding our hair, cleaning our puke, helping us change clothes, wiping off tear stained mascara, basically cleaning us up when we get to be a hot mess deserving of an award to commemorate the hot messiness. Our actual mothers got to change diapers and clean snotty noses, but now it is you, Mom of the Friend Group, who does the dirty jobs.

6. Thank you for being there.

If you are the mom of the friend group, you spend the majority of your time being annoyed by us, but then there are times when you get to experience the rewarding part of motherhood. We always come to our friend mom for advice, for a good cry, or for a big hug. And the biggest thing we have to thank you for, is for being there whenever we need you. So Happy Mother's Day to all the moms of the friend group out there. And may your mom-ness never go out of style.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
