First of all, let me say thank you. Thank you because Nancy Pelosi is one hell of a successful, strong woman who speaks up for what she believes in, so I will gladly take your insult as a compliment.
Time for a little background...
At work this past Saturday I was doing the usual...working, when an old white man(not stereotyping) asked for a service that must be paid for in order to be provided. In response I told him it's okay but for next time just know that is a service that needs to be paid for and that we can get in trouble if we provide that service for no charge.
He proceeded to ask me if I wanted the tip or not. Of course. I always appreciate a tip, however I would rather keep my job.
"Nah nah nah you're a loud mouth just like Nancy Pelosi, nah nah nah" as he used his hands to mock me right in front of my face. "I've never seen you around here ever before and I don't want to see you ever again, go take a walk". First of all, no sir I'm going to stay here and do my job like I'm supposed to. Secondly, thank you so much for being mature about this I really appreciate it. "Go take a walk you loud mouth". Again, no I'm going to stay right here and do my job. If you have a problem with what I have told you, you are more than welcome to speak to a manager.
And he did.
Did I get in trouble? Absolutely not. Did he tell my manager a completely opposite story even though there were several of my coworkers around as witnesses? You betcha!
Part of me wonders why he had to bring politics in to try to insult me. You want to show me you're a right-winger and that somehow is going to make me think you're better than me? No, it goes to show you have the same characters as our bigot president. Also, why are you so mad? Because I called you out for trying to get something you need to pay for? You're mad because I didn't give you something for free that I'm not supposed to do anyway?
And when I was asked by my coworkers how I handled him being so incredibly rude so well, I had to tell them it is simply the same treatment I, and many of my coworkers and other customer service workers out there, receive on a daily basis.
By no means am I stereotyping the elderly baby boomers, but there are repeated experiences I have been blessed to go through that makes you wonder. Sure, I understand that senior citizens are on a fixed income. I have grandparents that are in that boat. And not all seniors are like this, but there are some that think they are entitled to free services and goods or discounts because they are a certain age. First of all, no. And there are veterans out there going around looking for the same thing because they have served. While your service is much appreciated, I can't provide you a discount that my company does not allow.
I've fought with customers a decent amount of times about company policies I must follow and cannot change, but still will receive demeaning treatment. I don't enjoy making customers mad; I don't think anyone does. I do enjoy my job and would prefer to keep it. The next time a customer service worker tells you something they cannot do or something you didn't want to hear, realize they aren't saying it for fun. They're saying it because it's their job.
And sir, if you were going to insult me, calling me Betsy DeVos would have been a better dig.
