If you have been following the news over the past weekend and into the week, a lot had happened with the alt-right in Charlottesville, Virginia. The photograph that sticks out in my mind is one of Peter Cvjetanovic. You don't know his name, but you know his face.
Peter here is a college student. One who didn't fear showing his face this weekend. He was shocked to learn of how viral this photo has become. This is 2017. Where everything and anything goes viral. This was one of the first photos to come out on Friday night. How did you not know this was going to go all over the Internet? Every time I open up Twitter and I see your face. One filled with hatred and rage.
You've tried to explain yourself, but that explanation is not enough. You want to preserve white European culture? It isn't going anywhere. This is America. Where all cultures are supposed to be welcomed to help make us a better country. This means black culture, Muslim cultures, Jewish cultures and so many more belong here. No one is trying to replace white European culture. If anything we are trying to share and learn about others.
The removal of a statue is not a replacement of "white heritage". It's trying to move past a dark time in our nations history. A time a lot of people aren't proud of. But you want to preserve it? What is there to preserve? Peter said "White nationalists aren't all hateful: We just want to preserve what we have". Please Peter. Define what we have. When I want to preserve what we have I want to preserve a country that has no hate in it. One that opens it's arms to all to help create a better country. I want to preserve the diversity of America. One that doesn't judge by it's skin color or how one dresses or what religion they practice. I don't know if you and I see the same America.
You can try and explain yourself all you want. But at the end of the day, you are the angry racist in the photo.
