To The Girl With A Broken Wing

An open letter to my best friend and to all who have wanted to fly.

The wonderment

in your eyes for worlds you have not explored yet

Can light up a city

Your ambition

Buzzes through your aura

Like an electric fence, protecting your dreams

And as much as you want to lift off and soar

You can’t.

Your wings are

Bent at the tip

A little broken

Too small to carry you to the heights you want to achieve

So

While you’re waiting to heal

Grow with me

Walk the Earth beside me and let’s continue to discover the little things about ourselves like

What spot in the city makes us feel like we’re home again

What makes our jaw tick and our fists clench

What kind of coffee keeps us pushing through the day

And what tea helps us curl up in fuzzy blankets at night

And while we do that

Let’s trip

Stumble

Get hurt together

Because you can’t ever fly if you’re so afraid of what hitting the ground feels like

Let’s keep our feet on the ground and our head in the clouds

Let your hair loose and feel every single drop of change

Fall from the sky and seep into your skin

Don’t let them dampen your feathers

But show you that you need to be roughed up

To be able to face the thunderstorms up ahead

You’ll be faced with a lot of obstacles

A lot of road blocks

A lot of situations that will make you want to rip your wings out

Call it quits

And never want to look up at the sky ever again

But sweetheart,

The more you fall the higher you rise

And I know

I know you think you’ll be too heavy to fly

But honey,

You’ve been chained down for so long

You deserve to be free

From the heaviness of the world

And yourself

You are strong.

Brave.

Independent.

And I am glad to run this race with you.

But promise me,

That when you are no longer broken

When your wings are no longer a burden

But an escape

You will remember me.

As the one thing that keeps you rooted

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
