“Friends come and go” is a saying you all have probably heard by now. But what I have recently began to ponder is this: why is that so? Why do friends come and go? If they are true friends, shouldn’t they stay with you through the good times and the bad?
I’m sure we’ve all have those friends who are only there for you when you need something, when it’s convenient for them or when you're a light in the sea of darkness. However, dearest friends, this letter is not for you.
This letter is for the friends who have stuck by my side when all was lost, when the fat lady was no longer singing and my life was a whirlpool of emotions leading me to be a typical teenage girl struggling with heartbreak, family issues and a mysterious quest to find out who exactly I was.
Thank you to those friends — thank you for all you have done for me.
Thank you for seeing me at my worst, a 12-year-old brace face who thought snap-on bracelets were cool. Thank you for seeing me at my best, an award-winning senior in high school about to embark on a new journey at her top choice college.
When all seemed to be crashing down in this so-called life of mine, you were there. When I felt as if I could no longer continue, you were there to pick me up. You were a shoulder to cry on and a text that was always answered. You were a dance partner, a sleepover adventurer and a party partner when needed.
Many times these moments are overlooked, and people forget how important these moments actually are. This is written so you can remember, at all times, that you were there for me, and I will always be there for you.
When there is no light, when you are dealing with a lonely cry at night, when there's a drama-filled screenshot that you just cannot bear to deal with, I will still be here.
Friendship is defined as “a person who you like and enjoy being with.” Lame.
You are much more than that to me, so let me redefine this.
Friendship to me is a person who is there for you when the going gets tough.
Friendship to me is a person who constantly has your back.
Friendship to me is a person telling you straight up how it is, to stop you from being a fool.
Friendship to me is sitting in complete silence and being comfortable and happy because you know they’re there.
Friendship to me is laughs, tears and memories.
Friendship to me is not seeing someone in months and when you do, it's like nothing has changed.
Friendship to me is all of this and more.
Thank you for your friendship.
I'll keep this letter short and sweet. Thank you for being there for me when it was easy to bail or drift. Thank you for being you.
Thank you for continuing to have my side today, even if we are states (and sometimes even countries) away.
Though as we age, we may not talk every day, I know you are there for me if something goes wrong. I know that all it would take is a simple text message from you to make my hurt feelings go away.
Sincerely,
Your friend forever
