In high school you led your local FFA, FCCLA, FBLA, and FCA chapters. You gave the pre-game basketball pump up speech before you led your team to a victory over your biggest rival. You had trouble saying no when people asked you to do something. You had to go above and beyond on your Spanish projects because that's just how you are. That's just how you are because you were raised to know that to be the best, this is what you had to do. This isn't being a kiss up, conceited, or even an over achiever, this is being a Doer.
You're now about to finish a semester of college and you're still as driven as you were in those days of 7 a.m sports practices and late night play rehearsals. If you're anything like me, last night you fell asleep pinning something about your future on one of your many Pinterest boards and you woke up excited to take on another day of doing. Your planner is probably chalked full of inspiring quotes and daily to-do lists, and you love checking those things off.
Today you will probably spend part of the day in your favorite coffee shop working on your final assignments and study guides. You might have people drop by and say hello every few hours because you've made those kind of connections so far in college. Throughout the day you'll take small breaks from whatever you're doing and change your Spotify playlist or check your emails. You'll let your mind wander for a few moments then get back to doing.
Sometime while you're sitting in your coffee shop, at your normal table, sipping the same drink you get every time you're there, you'll realize something. You'll realize that you're tired of doing.
You're tired of being the one to do it all. You're tired of knowing if you don't, nobody else will. You're tired of homework, work, financial stress. You're tired of being the mediator between friends who had an argument. You're tired of planning, investing, and putting what seems like endless effort into something that doesn't produce adequate results. You think if you didn't do so much, you wouldn't be having this problem.
As you take another sip of coffee you think about life without doing. You picture being able to sit in your bed and watch Netflix for hours on end, you think about the fun nights you wouldn't miss out on from being so busy, and you imagine a life without so much stress.
A life without so much of everything sounds great, but if we as doers, don't, then who will? Don't quit doing what you do because God knows we don't have enough doers like you. Don't quit the long nights and tough assignments. Don't quit saying yes to everything someone asks you to do. Don't quit dreaming about the future and all that it entails. Don't quit loving the feeling of success. Don't quit checking off your lists. Don't quit doing what you love, because I know that you love to do.
