As you said in your article for me To The Best Friend Who Stayed When I Left, we weren’t always friends, but when we did, we had an instant connection. In a time when I felt like I couldn’t trust any of my current friends that I’ve known for years, you came into my life, just by sitting in front of me during psychology class. We started bonding over books, drama club, and other nerdy things that we both liked.
Then I realized something special: you laughed at my stupid jokes. You cared about my opinions and what I had to say, which are things that I thought my current friends forgot how to do.
We had that back-and-forth quirky friendship you would only see on teenage sitcoms that we thought would go on for more seasons. Of course, we hit that block that many high school friendships hit at some point: college. It wasn't easy hearing that you wanted to go out of state, while I wanted to stay close to home. Even though I was scared for what would happen to the friendship, I remained happy for you and proud.
When you did leave, and we both started college, we drifted apart for a little while, which I expected. We had our own stuff going on. But when I needed you, I knew you were a phone call away. You knew that I was the same way. Anything you ever needed I would listen and be there for you. And when you came back for the summer I knew it would be like no time has passed. You're that unlikely friend, the kind that I never thought I would have, but you're a once in a lifetime friend. You reminded me that it's okay to be myself, at a time when I almost forgot how.
To anyone who is nervous about putting their friendship to the test with some distance, like I was, it's okay to be. If it works out, it will be stronger than ever before. If it doesn't that's okay too. Wish him/her luck and prepare to open the door to new friends.
Mindy, you’re my best friend. Thank you for being there to laugh at my jokes. Thank you for introducing me to books that have changed my life and imagination. Thank you for being a tough voice behind me when I’m being impulsive and stupid. Thank you for dealing with blonde moments (LORD KNOWS I HAVE PLENTY OF THEM). Most of all, thank you for being you.
With love,
The best friend who stayed at home
For the readers, here's my best friend's touching article to me that I mentioned earlier. She's a kickass writer.
