Dear Potential Transfer Student,
So, you aren’t completely satisfied at your current university? No problem! There are hundreds of colleges across the country that you can attend instead, so just pack up your bags, hop in your car, and get off at the next exit where you’ll find the college of your dreams!
Unfortunately, transferring isn’t quite that easy. It takes a lot of guts to start all over again. You feel like a freshman all over again trying to find your classroom and building while also trying to figure out how long it takes you to get to that classroom in order to maximize the amount of sleep you get. You have a whole new set of professors to learn, and you haven’t been around long enough to know whether or not that one professor that everyone talks about really gives as much work as everyone says. You pass countless faces you’ve never seen before, and even though the people you pass on your way to class may say hello, their faces are still foreign. As you walk to your first class you get that same feeling you did during your freshman year…that feeling of “Oh my gosh—what am I doing? I can’t do this, I must have been crazy to think that I could handle this!”
Ready for some good news, though? The feeling of being a second (or in some cases even third-year) freshman quickly disappears. You start to meet people, and that lecture hall that you were so scared about actually turns out to be one of your favorite classes. You realize that the things you liked about your old college are still present at this one, and the things that you didn’t like about your old college aren’t present. Instead, the negatives from before have been fixed, and now they’re positives.
So, if you feel like you need to transfer, the truth is you probably do. And, as scary as it may seem to make that move—it will end up being the best decision of your college career. I’m a transfer student, myself, and transferring is the best decision I have ever made. I love my new university, and I’m able to pursue the career path that I want to. I’m able to be a journalism and pre-law major. I’m able to explore my love for journalism while also exploring the potential of law school and being a politician or maybe even a lawyer. I have met like-minded people to myself, who also share a love and a passion for writing and law.
I feel a sense of belonging here and trust me nothing feels better than that. I know that I’m where I belong, and I only hope and pray that you will find your place as well.
With Love,
A Fellow Transfer Student
