An Open Letter To My University

You've given me so much in so little time.

To my university,

Even though I have only been here for one full year (going on two), I feel as though I have been here my whole life. Every day I wake up and look outside my window and think, "I'm home." Being here has made me realize so many great things about life and about myself, and I honestly do not think I could have made a better decision when it came to choosing where I would spend these four years of my life while getting my degree. You've shown me so much in such little time, so I want to thank you for some of those things.

First, thank you for letting me find myself. Coming in, I was so lost in my own mind about who I was and where I was going. But since I've been here, since I've gone to classes, since I've mingled with faculty, I am finally finding who I truly am and who I really want to be. The reason I am so grateful for this is because you have helped me find this out about myself by not really doing anything at all. Sounds contradicting, I know, but what I mean is that there is nothing that you as a university are forcing me to do. Everything is my own final decision (with a few exceptions of course), and as I make those decisions, they are supported and encouraged by our faculty. That support and encouragement is what's making me truly discover myself. Thank you for that.

Next, I have you to thank for every single person who has come into my life during my time here. Both faculty and students alike, I am finding incredible friendships and professional relationships here solely because of everything that you do for us. Clubs, teams, free events--all of these things have allowed for me to broaden my circle of friends and meet people whom I never imagined I would meet. I am blessed to attend a university that supplies its students with so many amazing opportunities to have fun and meet new people.

Lastly, and most importantly, I just want to thank you for accepting me. Choosing to further your education after high school is not something to take lightly, and when I made the decision to continue, I was sure that nobody would accept me. But then, you did and my world has been forever changed. Not only am I receiving the best education possible, but I am also receiving some of the greatest leadership and advancement opportunities that there are. This place, this wonderful place, is shaping me into the best person that I can be, and I am so blessed. Thank you for all that you have done for me so far, and I cannot wait to see what else you have to offer me.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
