What a time... to be alive. As freshman year comes to an end, I can't help but to be a wreck of emotions. How on Earth is freshman year already over and done with? I feel like I literally blinked and poof, I'm packing up my dorm room. Freshman year has been a roller coaster or good times, stressful days, emotional nights, but most importantly, has been a ride filled with unforgettable memories spent with some of the most amazing people that I'm not quite sure how I survived 18 years without them. As I sit here and look back on freshman year, there are so many things I would never do differently, but there are also quite a few things that I would change. Sophomore year, and the years to follow, are the years where you begin to put yourself and your life together (and yes, that does mean you'll be one step closer to being an actual adult). These are some of the most exciting times of our lives and while yes, everyone wants to be a freshman forever, becoming a sophomore doesn't have to be so bad. With each year, we learn from our mistakes and move one step closer to becoming an actual adult (scary, I know).
So to my future sophomore self, remember that one time freshman year that you got super stressed out when everyone in your friend group was running late and no matter what you said, they just couldn't seem to get it together? Yeah, me neither. Stressing yourself out over the little things is 100 percent not worth it. While in the moment it may seem like the most frustrating thing, I can guarantee that within a few weeks, that moment where your world was so chaotic will be a distant memory way in the past. Plus, stressing causes worry lines, which really speeds up the process of becoming an adult, and none of us want that. Oh, and remember that one time where you actually studied your hardest for a test and were determined to do well, but the grade you received was far from good enough? Yeah, that did happen and probably will happen again, but college isn't high school anymore. So many of us, including myself, come from a high school that if you put in the work, the grade would positively reflect that work. But in college, sometimes, it just doesn't work out that way. And that's OK. One bad grade could actually do us all some good and remind us to stay grounded and humbled. OMG and remember that time where you were completely distraught by a boy, but those great people I was talking about earlier were there with a shoulder to cry on (and maybe a bottle of Moscato)? These kinds of nights were some of the hardest, but also some of the most eye-opening. As you sat there in tears over a boy who was so not worth your time, you looked around and realized that so many people were there to help you get through it, and they were down to bash on him until you couldn't do it anymore. Boys are another thing that are 100 percent not worth the worry lines. So when this happens again, remember those amazing people you were lucky enough to make friends with will be right over to completely change your mood around. And one super important one, remember when you had those days where nothing you did was right and you felt like you were the only person on this huge campus that was struggling? Well guess what, you weren't. So many young people feel as if they need to put on this front that everything is fine and that they are fine and not struggling with anything. But in reality, we all are going through something. So when those feelings of just overwhelming anxiety hit, know that you're never truly alone with those feelings.
While I hate the fact that time truly does seem to fly faster and faster the older we get, I am in fact very excited to see where life takes us each and every year. I am not the same person I was back in August, and next May, I will probably be a completely different person than I am right now as I write this. While being a freshman forever does sound nice, I couldn't be more excited to take on round two in The Classic City. Peace, love, freshman year.
