Happy Father's Day to all the new dads out there first of all.
To my son's father,
Happy first Father's Day. I know today is a special day for you and one of the most important days you will have for the rest of your life. I'm sorry that we will not be together to celebrate but that does not diminish what I think of you as a father to our son.
If I had to imagine to the ideal father for my child, it would always be you. Not only does our son light up when he sees you, because you are the favorite parent, but you light up even more. That is the truest love I could ever ask for. Everything you do, you do for him. He may not remember all of these things, but I always will.
When I first found out I was pregnant, it was not the ideal situation either of us had planned. Despite that, you immediately stepped up into the role of father and when we discussed our plans I remember you expressing the joy of realizing you were going to become a father. After that, you made sure to be at every appointment possible with me. What was even more adorable was that you recorded his first heartbeat and still carry his first ultrasound picture in your wallet. When I let you find out his sex first so you could surprise me, I know how much you wanted a little boy so I can only imagine the excitement you felt when you found out. Before you even met him, you were already so in love with him and watching you like this made me fall in love with you.
You put your life and career on hold to come and live with me to be with your son. While I was at school, you were at home taking care of and spending time with him. You were the parent that learned what his different cries meant and had his routine down to a science. Honestly, in many ways you were more hands on than I was. Even as a baby, our son desires nothing more than to be next to you. The relationship you have with him already brings me so much joy and I cannot wait to see it grow.
A boy always needs his daddy and I know that you will ensure that you go above and beyond in every aspect of his life. I could not have asked for a better partner to go down the road of parenthood together. Your compassion and love for not only him, but me, is what makes me realize how lucky I am every day.
